Building an All-Star LinkedIn Profile

Building an All-Star LinkedIn Profile

This is a weekly newsletter where I share tips on Resume/LinkedIn/Data Analytics/Data Science/Product Management domains. Follow this space for more on these topics.

Different Sections that you can optimize on LinkedIn to build an All-Star Profile

Banner

The design of the banner can be created on canva. It’s a free tool and can be easily used to create different designs for LinkedIn banners. Just type LinkedIn Banner and you will find plenty of designs. Include different tools example (Symbols of Tableau, R, Python), Different Cloud Technologies that you have worked on example (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.), and anything & everything related to your work on the banner

Display Picture

Display Picture should be a clear headshot with a contrasting background so that your picture is visible. You can use background.bg to remove any background and add the desired background.

Header

The header is one of the most important sections on LinkedIn. Make sure to include important keywords in this section. This section acts like an SEO that recruiters use to find ideal and good candidates. Include the different skills and tools you are good at. For Example – Data Scientist @ Company Name| SQL | Python | Tableau, etc. If you are a student include School and Program Name.

Email

Add your Email in the Edit section on the top right corner of your page

Open to

Use this section if you are finding jobs. You can enable Open to Work by following the below steps

??Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage

??Click View profile. Activate to view larger image

??Click the Open to button

??Click Finding a new job

??Provide the requested information in the pop-up window that appears.

??Click Add to profile.

Note - It’s not important to add this feature to your profile picture

Featured

Add your most important posts in this section which can include certifications, Recognition, Awards, and Posts

Activity

Engaging and building a Network on LinkedIn also plays a role in your profile being discovered by the recruiters. So build content, engage with your network, reach out to people outside your network, comment on different posts by adding your 2 cents. This will make your profile more visible

Connections

To increase your visibility on LinkedIn, it is also important to have 500+ connections. So, make sure you reach that mark soon.

About

You can add around 2000 characters in this section, so make the most of this space.

Things to include in about section:

  • Be creative to build your story and Experience
  • Group your skills to include Technical and Soft Skills
  • Most importantly make use of 2000 characters and use the whole space
  • Conclude with Elevator Pitch/CTA that you can offer
  • Finally include contact details like Email, Phone Number (Optional)

Experience

Have Bullet point experience statements in the form of STAR (Situation, Task, Action & Result) format

  • Quantify your metrics and stress on the impact created
  • Write these bullet points for each of your experience
  • Don’t leave anything blank
  • Include Tech Stack at the top/bottom of each experience which includes tools used, skills used, etc.

Education

Include relevant coursework wherever it aligns with your current career aspirations and works

Licenses and Certifications

List out all the certifications that you have completed

Skills

  • Make sure you make use of this section and add all the 50 skills
  • Give endorsement to your network and get endorsed. Make this a regular practice

Interests

  • If you are a job applicant follow the desired companies you want to work for and keep adding value on their page consistently
  • Network with people on those pages
  • Follow groups of desired interest. Start Networking in these groups

People You May Know

You will find this section in the top right corner. Disable this on your profile because when recruiters land on your page, they will be able to see people similar to your background in your 1st or 2nd connection network if not disabled and you don’t want that.

There you go you have an All-Star LinkedIn Profile! Hurray!!

Quote of the Week

“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger. Roots entrench themselves and branches grow. The task of breaking a bad habit is like uprooting a powerful oak within us. And the task of building a good habit is like cultivating a delicate flower one day at a time.”

Books I am reading this month

Atomic Habits - Compounding is the most important life skill! Until whatever I have read, this gives perspective on how important every tiny habit is to create a huge impact and how small habits can bring compounding results.

The Subtle Art of not giving a Fu*k - The Takeaway from this book till now is it’s important to give importance to only meaningful metrics in life and ignore all the other unimportant things. That makes life a lot easier, doesn’t it?
