Here's how you can foster creative problem-solving within your team.

Make sure everyone is involved, and I mean everyone. Listen more than you speak. Be open to suggestions and make sure that all people get their turn to point out solutions. Make sure that people respect each other and their opinions.

One of the valuable practices is letting the ideas start from the junior staff to senior members. This is a practice commonly used on a submarine. Good ideas come from everywhere!

Seek candidates from varied backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Diversity in ethnicity, gender, age, education and professional background can bring different viewpoints and approaches to problem-solving. Embracing diversity includes making everyone feel valued and able to contribute their unique perspectives.

What's important is 'diversity of thought' and not just culture or demographics, as it tends to imply to many. The quality of being 'wired differently' is what contributes to diversity of thought. Creativity and ingenuity in problem-solving come from the diversity of thought, be it culture, training, being wired to think differently, thinking (and doing) outside the box, etc. I would reposition this section as 'Embrace Diversity of Thought'.

Creating a safe environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas is crucial for fostering creativity. Here are key steps to achieve this: a. Establish Trust and Openness: Cultivate a culture where team members trust one another and feel free to express their thoughts without fear of ridicule or negative repercussions. b. Encourage honest and respectful communication. c. Value Contributions: Show appreciation for all ideas, regardless of how unconventional they might be. Recognize and celebrate creativity and risk-taking to reinforce that all contributions are valued. d. Promote Psychological Safety: Ensure that team members feel safe to speak up by actively listening to their ideas and providing constructive feedback.

Promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and constructive feedback. Establish an environment where team members feel safe sharing ideas without fear of criticism. Also ensure everyone’s voice is heard and considered.

It pumps me to know and to meet more people who believe in this and also are actively creating or maintaining this environment of safety. I have observed in more instances where even those on the fringe have started joining the chats. Now THAT is testimony

This is very crucial if you want to retain your top talent sourced both from outside and within the company. All participants in the Team must be motivated to speak. Organizations where senior management follow old school techniques of driving only what they intent to be done creates negativity and toxic work culture attracting attrition including failure to meet desired goals.

Encourage team members to experiment with new ideas and approaches without fear of failure. Emphasize that taking calculated risks is a valuable part of the creative process and innovation. Celebrate the lessons learned and foster an envmnt where failures are viewed as learning opportunities in true spirit of Agile (Inspect and Adapt).

Encouraging risk-taking is vital for creative problem-solving. Allow your team to take calculated risks without fearing failure, as this opens the door to innovative ideas and solutions. Support your team when they step out of their comfort zones and view failures as learning opportunities. This approach builds a resilient team that's unafraid to experiment and challenge the status quo.

Companies want to be seen to encourage risk taking. They hire 'new blood' hoping to infuse new ideas, which comes with some degree of risk-taking. However, it is easier for 'new blood' to 'try', as they seem to have the support of management.... until the idea reaches a milestone, which 'triggers' or pushes management's 'purported risk limit', which is NOT KNOWN to every other level of the organization below top management. SO, when we do reach this level of management, may we remember to also share WHERE the level of risk tolerance is & NOT WASTE every new hire's time.

Avoiding micromanagement is the key to encourage risk and in turn achieve resilient team which is proactive team motivated to perform with desired ownership.

Fostering a safe and encouraging environment at work that allows personnel to experiment and take risks without becoming concerned about the outcome is essential to motivating individuals to take opportunities. Taking estimated risks while offering your team with a wealth of knowledge from your experiences, both good and bad. Demonstrate your faith in the skills and judgment of your team. Encourage them to take chances even if the results don't work out. Promote pilot projects or small-scale studies as a way to evaluate new ideas without dedicating a large amount of resources. Regardless of the result, commend and honor team members who take chances.

My thinking is that BEFORE regular brainstorming sessions are implemented, Top Management MUST be seen in word and actions, to support creative thinking. If THIS is not seen, or if top management is NOT seen to be improving, regular brainstorming sessions may just be a waste of time. When staff at departmental levels know that NO concrete change will result, it will die an early death. An alternative is to use departmental or team brain storming sessions to include top management (where appropriate) and allow top management to see the dynamic discussions and the results for themselves.

In my opinion, regular brainstorming sessions are crucial for fostering creative problem-solving within a team. Many organizations do regular brainstorming but still fail regularly in achieving what was intended from those sessions. Primary reason for that is the team is not motivated and lacks ownership. How to add that is to add timely rewards in every session and you'll witness desired faster results.

Reverse brainstorming or negative outcome brainstorming is powerful as well. Instead of brainstorming ideas to retain customers (and look for something new that you haven't tried)... do the opposite. What can we do to pi$$ off as many customers as possible? To increase the abandonment rate? Now... switching back to the positive... how many of these are occurring or are we doing today? Use this insight to find new ways to help solve your problem and eliminate pain points.

Periodic brainstorming sessions are an effective way to solve issues, generate fresh concepts, and promote teamwork. Establish and adhere to a regular timetable for brainstorming sessions, such as once a week, twice a week, or monthly. Have meetings in an area that inspires creativity, such one with comfy chairs, post-it notes, and whiteboards. Remote teams can also benefit from the usage of virtual technologies like Zoom, Miro, or MURAL. After the meeting, classify the concepts and rank them in order of importance for additional research. Honor and honor each team member's unique contributions and efforts. When feasible, put brainstorming session ideas into practice and emphasize the benefits they offer for the company.

Learning is always pro-active. Forced learning never reaps desired results. While many organizations promote continuous learning however lack minimum participation is due to the missing work life balance given to its team members. Resolve it and achieve continuous learning to its maximum.

As a leader, you are responsible for promoting a continuous learning environment for your team. Don't let your employees become stagnant in their roles and be sure to schedule weekly 1:1's to speak about progress, struggles, goals, etc. Keep your employees as engaged as possible to avoid losing them to the next best opportunity. Remember employees leave leaders, not companies and it is your responsibility to try to retain them. Schedule training workshops, webinars, or even offer to help with the cost for additional certifications if your company will allow it. These perks will benefit everyone in the long run and better ensure their retention for both you and your company.

Foster a culture of continuous learning to enhance your team's creative problem-solving abilities by encouraging curiosity and the pursuit of new knowledge. Provide access to training, workshops, and resources that support skill development and innovative thinking, and allocate time for individual learning projects to inspire creativity and boost the team's ability to tackle complex challenges. A team dedicated to continuous learning is more adept at finding innovative solutions, so promote ongoing education and skill acquisition to cultivate a mindset that leads to better problem-solving and a more dynamic approach to challenges.

I would add psychological safety to the list, as it is very important for team members, especially junior colleagues, to be able to express their point of view without being threatened and to feel safe in doing so.

Refining Creative Problem-Solving Techniques Through reflection and debriefing, teams can continuously refine their problem-solving techniques. Here’s how this process works: Identifying Patterns: By regularly reflecting on past projects, teams can identify patterns in what strategies consistently lead to success or failure. This helps in developing a set of best practices. Encouraging Innovation: Discussing what could be improved encourages team members to think creatively about new solutions and approaches, fostering a culture of innovation. Building on Experience: Applying lessons learned from previous projects helps the team to avoid past mistakes and leverage proven strategies, making their problem-solving approach more effective.

The learning cycle (described as action, reflection and adaptation) enabled better mapping and the adaptation of better project tools, techniques and approaches providing better vision definition, scoping mechanisms and stakeholder engagement. Each sector or culture has slightly different adaptations but the same basic principles apply to all. The keys in reflecting, adapting and evolving go back to Aristotle’s theory and practice concepts. These were developed and applied in such situations over millennia since, and have subsequently evolved and further developed, leading us to present theory and practice within that extending framework. What evolved is the need to keep steps simple, focused and not too complicated.

Consequently, execute lesson learned is elementary and make sure, people of your but also customer organization find an atmosphere of freely giving their mind. Ask actively those who remain silent. Lesson learned is not alone at the end of the project relevant, but also at the end of project phases or after regular timescales. Create a learning organization but store and consolidate lesson learned through a PMO; make this procedure part of your central PMO project review. It makes a tremendous difference!

Creative problem solving needs Synthetic thinking. This involves drawing a single solution from multiple inputs, and these inputs could be from the past experiences Synthetic style of thinking compliments Analytical style and when put together can generate creative ideas. Program manager has to lead by example in applying these techniques.

7. Create capacity Creative problem solving requires time, along with structured approach and access to relevant information/content/data/research/skills. This is not a short cut, but critical input into the process. Often organisations create this through consulting companies or outsource service providers.

They should also lead by example, demonstrating a willingness to take risks and try new approaches. Clear Goals and Objectives: Provide your team with clear, meaningful goals and objectives to guide their problem-solving efforts. This gives them a sense of purpose and direction, helping them stay focused and motivated.

Open Communication: Foster open and honest communication within your team. Encourage team members to share their ideas and concerns freely, and listen actively to their feedback. This can help build trust and collaboration, which are essential for creative problem-solving. Reward and Recognition: Recognize and reward team members for their creative problem-solving efforts. This can be done through formal rewards, such as bonuses or promotions, or informal recognition, such as praise or thank-you notes.

Risk analysis! Apart from the initial risk assessment that should be done for any project, carry out a regular risk update, this is a perfect opportunity for people identify possible problems and brainstorm solutions, it also helps people to be aware of what to do should something change, or go wrong. Identify key individuals in each department and bring them together as required, have a clear agenda to manage current risk plan, identify any new risks and conditions under which the mitigation should be triggered.
