Here are some tips to help develop this skill. 1: Completely wait for the other person to finish talking, don't cut them off half way through to add your comment. 2: Summarise what the other person has just said to you before saying what you have to say, this shows you listened and gives them a chance to correct you if you have misunderstood them.

Structure is great, but to truly be a thought leader you must know how to take great ideas from other industries and bring them into your own. Sometimes outside the box thinking can really just be outside the industry thinking. Its less risky as its already been proven elsewhere.

Publicly acknowledging breakthroughs or milestones, through team events, shout outs, or awards, reinforces desired behaviors and boosts morale. One thing I’ve found helpful to support creativity, innovation and collaboration, as a leader, is to also allow for mistakes and fails. Or as some leaders remind all of us, that there is only success and learning, after trying something new or different. And we as leaders need to lead by example and create environments that when something is tried, and doesn’t work out as planned, that we also need to be there, be present, to help folks learn through it…and not focus on the “fail”. I have found when you do, folks are more willing to bring bolder ideas to try next time, and after 20 years of doing this, we see more bolder, and more successful ideas. (And it also means that we as leaders need to talk about our own learnings.)
