For properly implementing algorithms, you need to understand the data types you're working with, decide what language is best suited to the method you want to implement and what your desired output should be. It's mostly maths, so pen and paper never hurts to test out a idea beforehand and see how it flows. And like most receipes, you'll make improvements as you go and it will get easier with practice!

I don't know if I'm the best candidate to speak on this, but I was taught that the best code you can write are the programs that run the fastest and use up the least amount of resources on any device. For Big O(n) , I always took that to mean implementing a method that used memory effienctly and kept run times as low as possible. How easy or hard achieving that target of O(n) mostly depends on the language you're using. And the best approach for each is picking a storage method for your variables that makes scaling up to bigger datasets convienent for reading and writing to that data quickly. For example, in Python, most like to use Pandas with Dataframes, or use Dictionaries to quickly sort what they need in implementation.
