Here's how you can extract valuable lessons from failure in a Live Events career.

There's no such thing as a perfect show. Accept that and you're half way there. Stuff will change, stuff will go wrong, stuff will happen. How you deal with it is key. At the end of the day, your guests won't care about or remember the tiny glitches. They will remember whether the show got derailed or whether the staff was on the ball taking care of everything. Follow the puck, and keep things moving. Then debrief afterwards and figure out what process need to improve, NOT which people to blame.

Navigating a career in live events is indeed a journey full of lessons. From my experience, embracing setbacks is not just about accepting failure, but actively seeking the silver lining in every misstep. Each event is an opportunity to refine our skills and approach. Success is a terrible teacher, if you were to ask any Live Events professional about the biggest lesson they have learned working in the industry, it most likely will stem from failure. While, failing is frustrating it is how we learn and improve, by reframing failure from "this was a disaster" to "how can I improve this for next time" you make it possible to identify ways to improve your events and performance. It also helps you to maintain a positive mental attitude (PMA) when working in the sometimes chaotic live events industry where failure is common place.

Remain calm!! ?? ??Maintain composure to manage the situation effectively and quickly identify what went wrong and the impact. ??Inform your audience and team about the issue promptly and honestly. ??Activate any contingency backup plans or solutions you have prepared in advance.

I've found the after event meeting to be the most valuable, we review everything that went right and wrong review individually, check shortcomings and strengths the reconvene and review with solutions and stronger sop.

After a live event falters, it's crucial to thoroughly analyze what went wrong. Break down the event into components—venue selection, technical setup, performer coordination, and audience engagement. Examine each part for patterns or repeated mistakes, indicating deeper issues. Dissecting errors and understanding their root causes allows you to develop targeted strategies to prevent them from recurring. This approach not only addresses immediate problems but also enhances the quality of future events, ensuring a more successful and seamless experience for all involved.

The most important part of an event debrief is to take emotions out of the discussion. Blame is not productive or helpful. Generally speaking, nobody sets out to do a bad job. Break down the entire production from planning through to delivery, paying particular attention to: - Communication - What worked, what didn’t work, what could you do next time. Poor communication is one of the key factors when things go wrong. Time management - What took longer than expected? Break the tasks down into smaller parts, could anything have been done in advance? - Skills and competencies - What training and knowledge was missing from the team?

When you invest that much energy into your live performance, make sure to record the whole thing to get better afterwards - there's ALWAYS room for improvement, a curse and a blessing at the same time. Look at your body language, at your pronunciation, at the timings - and just keep working on the fundamentals. When you got your fundamentals right, there's literally nothing to worry about. And keep the audience on their heels - nothing is worse than people staring at their phones. Trust your senses on stage - when you lose their attention, it's time to wake 'em up!

Always have an after action report from every department involved in the event. This report should then be pulled out when start the pre-planning phase of a similar event or the same event coming back tomorrow.

If technical difficulties marred the event, invest time in additional training or equipment checks before the next one. Making informed adjustments to your approach transforms past failures into valuable lessons. This proactive stance ensures that each event is better than the last, propelling your overall success and preventing the recurrence of similar issues.

Be prepared that things may go wrong! No matter how much back up plans you may have, somethings are out of our control. However, failure or errors are always the best teachers. From my own experience these are the most important things that help me build my resilience: - Seeking constructive feedback - Having my own reflection on the event & how I conducted myself when under stress - Giving myself praise - Making a list of things I must do for next time

Siempre hay que tener un plan B, y un plan C, incluso un plan D. En los eventos pueden pasar muchas cosas y tener una opción diferente para cualquier imprevisto será importantísimo para el buen desarrollo de los mismos. A medida que trabajes en este sector irás comprendiendo que es trabajo cíclico y que situaciones que has vivido en otros trabajos se repiten. Utiliza esa experiencia ganada en otros eventos para comprobar todo antes de comenzar con el jaleo.

You always need a Plan B, maybe even a Plan C, which at one point might just be raw intuition or instincts if shit really hits the fan! ;) So when you're prepared for the worst, especially technically, you don't have to say you didn't try. You need fallback videos, better said redundancy in your tech setup, and if all of those points fail: the most important thing is what you want to transpire through your being to the audience's consciousness. If that means you gotta use sticks, stones and screaming to achieve it, so be it!

When it comes to achieving success in events, remember two key principles. First, avoid shortcuts at all costs. They may seem convenient, but they often lead to costly consequences down the line. Secondly, acknowledge your limitations as a human being. No matter how talented or hardworking you are, you can't do it all alone. You don't need to be the smartest person in the room, but if you excel at managing people and building a strong team, you'll be well-equipped to avoid mistakes and achieve your goals.

As a film maker/producer have had to organise many live outdoor shoots. Having a great small but multi-tasking team has been vital to success then you have a fast line of communication. Scheduling is massively important with real attention to detail learnt through some disastrous shoots in the past. Detailed planning is always key. With the above in place it's possible to pivot and switch plans rapidly in a smooth move that doesn't disrupt the overall aim. We're always dependent on changeable weather in Britain as such I've also become an expert on planning in keeping with weather forecasts sometimes just involving shifting some plans a couple of hours in one direction or another and adding in a plan B.

Always get a reality check for your events and this can be done by standing in front of the stage for a while (backstage can sometimes be an adrenaline rush) or asking friends in the audience for objective impressions (if they are not in the entertainment industry, is even better)
