IT like any professional pedigreed discipline requires skills and experience which is not learned in the classroom. The classroom may give you a good grounding start but it will be the demonstrated track record that proves to your current and future employers the value of your talent to the C-Suite. IT is about leadership with the technical specialization and forging that bond with your C-Suite colleagues to deliver the innovation-centric capability that drive revenue and expand market share. It is not technology for technology sake or chasing shiny nickels! Companies get what they paid for if they are not holding their IT Executive accountable to deliver revenue and expand their market share.

Remind yourself that your value is associated with your business application experience, solving business imperative problems, applying your experience to address the business case imperative and generate a return to your business stakeholders. The technology pieces are just the enablers, they will all talk a good fight, but your success is entirely a function of how you apply the enablers. If you have done the circuit, you will have seen technologies come and go in the popularity contest, but the technologies we deploy need to endure the long haul and create ROI.

There is a concept called a Candidate Market Fit, coined by Phyl Terry from the book Never Search Alone. It is really about understanding the relevancy of your skills and experience compared to what the market is asking for. Too many times senior leaders and seasoned professionals simply look for the next role based on the promotion ladder without careful consideration about what they are best suited for or would even want to do. The Candidate Market Fit is a borrowed concept from the product management world; you'd never take a product to market without gauging it's potential demand, late-career professionals should do the same. They might uncover a whole new world of roles not previously considered instead of what's on the next rung.

It’s all about Network, as I say “Life is a network - stay connected” and an immersive network is what you need to land at the next opportunity in life. Immersive network is where you have touched and created a lasting experience (not just impression) with the folks you have worked with in both professional and personal life. There is no better way to create lasting immersive network than by leveraging your strengths to help others be in client, partner, vendor, co- worker, industry peers or a budding professional. Keep creating “Immersive Network with lasting Experience” and you don’t have to sweat for the next gig!

I can't stress this point enough. If you have a few extra years under your belt then you know how to have a conversation. Pick up the phone and make appointments to speak with people. You will be surprised how many senior IT people will be willing to sit down with you, have a coffee (you should offer to buy) and give you pearls of wisdom. Don't be afraid to call, but if you don't know their number, reach out on LinkedIn. Make it personal though - definitely no spamming!

Your experience is key. Whether it’s specific technical skills (that are up to date) or general skills, like people management and leadership, understanding how to match your background (demonstrated skills people are looking for) aligns you with the opportunity and responses during interviews. Plus, looking at your skills and what you enjoy vs. the opportunity allows you to consider your “happiness” factor if in that role. It’s my opinion that life long learners have an advantage here.

When I worked for Capgemini, I often volunteered to lead or to be one of the leaders in new projects including in developing products and pitches for potential clients. This way I learned about the client's industry, the client, and new technologies and tools that could be leveraged withthe client and potentially with others.

As an IT professional who's had multiple decades of service in this industry the two main points I would suggest to anyone who needs to project sustained value is: a) Forget what you think you know and truly listen to those you are in conversation with. They might not be saying it effectively but if you listen hard enough you may find a truth that resonates within the message b) Always try to connect the micro to the macro. In my 2 Decades experience in IT, what I can suggest for, late career is: 1. Get high visibility on Social media, by writing blogs, expressing views, sharing good articles with your comments 2. Have depth in one particular technology or Business process or Industry domain or IT project or program management 3. If you are a techie get certified and participate in crowd sourcing platforms. 4. Learn processes like ITIL or Agile Devops and maybe product and portfolio management 5. Have a good connection with the network of professionals and keep exchanging technical knowledge helping each other Apart from above IT professionals need good communication skills and should be able to articulate and make an impact when in calls and interviews.
