You can gain experience no matter your current role. As you will be confronted with security related issues on almost every level. As a system administrator you can rigorously monitor your systems. And investigate any suspicious behavior you notice. Could be just bots probing. You can leave it at that. Or go deeper and try to understand how they found your system in the first place, for example. As a developer you can stay up to date with security updates on every package you implement. And investigate the implications in your project. Even if it does not affect your implementation. Since you are already familiar with the package, you might as well investigate the issue with minimal effort.

You don't have to know A-Z of cybersecurity or of any field for that matter. It is important to prioritise and seek which is the most area suitable to your inherent strengths and interests. Keeping a look-out for credible courses and learning is also key. Once you've found your niche, make sure to showcase what you got (skills) in ways of projects and collaborations.

Certain roles come with high responsibility. You should know ahead exactly who will be blamed for what in case of an incident. You could have specialized yourself to be an ethical hacker. And be very knowledgeable in defending against potential threads on the purely technical level. If you are hired in compliance enforcement and someone in the organization clicks a phishing mail. You might be held accountable. If you are uncomfortable with that possibility. Perhaps you should go for the analytical and research based roles. Or maybe you are one of those strict rule enforcers and will not shy away from responsibilities. It usually comes with higher compensation.
