As a new engineer though, you want to minimise your over reliance on tools. Grow deep to reach wide. Learn the basics mess with the mud a bit. This will help you understand some key concepts of your work and give you an insanely wide variety of skills. After experiencing that, you can now switch to being lazy and picking any tool that makes your life awesome. You'll even find that you have the power to trick some open source tools into doing what they weren't built to do and it's insanely fun.
