Quarterly Rocks: Focus on top priorities for the next 90 days. Issues List: Track and solve obstacles regularly to stay on course.

An effective vision calls to you when it’s tough and whispers, “It’s worthwhile, let’s do it.” It's aspirational and ties into you mission. The vision crafting challenge is to right size your vision to your situation. A Florida small rural museum's board told me they wanted to be the premier family experience in the state. It was aspirational--but none of the stakeholders were buying it. We returned to visioning and instead crafted a vision about being the best museum of its type in Florida that would attract visitors from across the country-this vision resonated with everyone.

Each one of your SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals can be reverse engineered into action steps to execute those results. Ensure that the accountable party has clarity on the first steps + what done looks like. You can dedicate other time tightening the specifics of each SMART goal.

It’s also important to align all your meetings and internal processes around your strategic goals. For example, the header topics on meeting agendas should be your goals, and your internal newsletter should also be organized by your goals. Doing so keeps your strategic goals top-of-mind for staff and other stakeholders and helps you all keep moving toward the finish line together.

I recommend meeting on a weekly basis to ensure than quarterly priorities are on track to be completed. Cultivating an honest environment where accountable people thrive and feel comfortable sharing when they are getting stuck is critical.
