I 100% agree on making sure an internship is a cultural match. Sure, gaining any experience in your desired pathway can be valuable.. But if you align, not only will you learn more, you're more likely be recognised and potentially kept on. Most companies or businesses have online mission or vision statements, sometimes it can be as simple as finding these on their website and seeing how they make you feel. If you noticed a twang of inspiration, you're probably heading to the right place.

In my experience a lot of people promise mentorship and continued learning, and it falls dramatically short. In my industry this is promised by the senior practitioner, manager or owner. If you see this person still operating heavily in the day-to-day duties of the business... mentorship may not be as promised. At the bare minimum they should have a set structure, so definitely ask. It also shows you're hungry and ready to learn. What a desirable trait!

Whilst the opportunity to continue growing within the same organisation may seem limited, does your internship come with high recognition, leading to other opportunities? Not trying to be all rhyme-y here, but as an intern, it should be all about what you LEARN, not what you earn. If you get an internship in a field you love, great. Use this as an opportunity to network and understand the people, culture, companies, and different areas within the industry that you'd like to explore working in fulltime. If you intern and decide that the industry/type of role/culture isn't for you, you've learned an incredibly valuable lesson and get to have even more focus on what path you should take. Fast forward a year from your internship and the lessons above are going to be much more impactful than the $10/$20/$30/hour you made for one summer.
