Throughout my professional career I have worked towards more efficient and optimized packaging solutions and at the same time I have sought to promote operational efficiency projects in conjunction with energy and water efficiency. My vision has always been integrated on these topics, which has allowed me to propose and implement projects with significant leaps forward in terms of sustainability, including major reductions in packaging weight and reduction in energy and water consumption. Start by knowing completely the industry you′re in and get to know your stakeholders. (Coworkers, Investors, Costumers, Government and Third Parties, etc.) 2. Learn each of your stakeholder's language; It is extremely different to speak about sustainability and engagement with a Government Official than your EHS Team in Operations & Manufacture for example. 3. There's a saying in the Sustainability World: What you don′t measure you can′t manage/improve. It is vital to keep track, measure performance, improve and communicate your sustainability milestones. 4. It is all about strategic alliances.

People connect with stories. To become a thought leader, share your sustainability journey! Write about the challenges you faced, the solutions you discovered, and the impact you've made. When you share your experiences, you inspire others to take action and become part of the sustainability movement. Your story becomes a blueprint, empowering others to write their own eco-chapters.

As sustainability becomes mainstreamed in business, leaders have unique opportunities to integrate their specific career skills along the topic. Build on the baseline of your skills, for example, an accountant can translate their skills to the rash of disclosure frameworks available. A manufacturing lead can apply efficient operational expertise to lower energy usage and translate that to dialogue around sustainability. Only you can tell your company's sustainability story internally (and maybe externally) as you can because only you have your unique perspective. I personally believe that knowledge should always be shared, what is particularly important in the sustainability field. There are so many sustainability professionals, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs working on valuable solutions that should speak louder to amplify their impact. I recognize that most of the times we are not taught how to do that, but knowledge kept behind doors is not only knowledge wasted, but also collaboration and business opportunities that will never see light.

Focus your thought leadership on what the reader should do differently as a result of your insight. Facts and landscape setting are valuable, but real "insight" comes from driving to the "so what?" of what the facts are telling you.

Building a strong network is crucial for establishing yourself as a thought leader in the sustainability industry. Moral: Leadership never expects expertise in all subjects, but it refers to continuous learning and adaptation on technical ground. For which, appreciation is indeed.
