When assessing your skills consider how experienced your are in the particular skill, how in demand the skill is, how difficult it is to learn and how many other people know the skill. For example, around the year 2000, the Y2K bugs in a lot of older systems increased the value of COBOL programmers, because there was a sudden increase in demand for a programming language that had been used in a lot of older systems when it was more popular. Some COBOL programmers actually came out of retirement, because the demand for experience programmers to fix Y2K problems in older systems was so high.

Los profesionales independientes de TI tienen muchos retos al ponerle precio a sus servicios. La primera decisión que hay que tomar es si el precio se definirá por hora profesional, o como cobro por el servicio completo, como un paquete. Ambos modelos tienen sus ventajas y desventajas. El cobro por horas usualmente tiene menos riesgo, porque si se cobra por paquete es posibe que el trabajo fuese sub-dimensionado, así que el esfuerzo adicional corre por cuenta del profesional. Pero al mismo tiempo el cobro por paquete, si el esfuerzo ha sido bien dimensionado, es usualmente más rentable. Mi recomendación es, para servicios en los cuales no tenemos tanta experiencia, cobrar por hora profesional para luego pasar al modelo de paquete.
