Events and conferences are a must if you want to build an image of yourself in the industry. Not only do they provide an important network of contacts, but they can also offer many opportunities. Therefore, even if you would like to attend as a speaker, even if it is as an attendee or volunteer, you are encouraged to participate.

Personally I love events for things I am passionate about. I will go to online ones just for new information or in-person ones for networking reasons. When you are doing networking in particular make sure you are contributing and seeing how you can help others instead of only what they can do for you.

Online makes the world both bigger and smaller at the same time. You are able to talk to people you would never have met otherwise about things that both interests you. Finding online groups and communities are a great use of the internet.

One of my favourite phrases is "you learn more by teaching than by studying". It is important to be encouraged to share what you know. Some people think they have nothing to offer, but that is never true. There are always new people who are eager to learn. I always think when I was younger and started in the world of cybersecurity, I wish I had someone to guide me and share some knowledge with me so I wouldn't be going in blind. So leading by example is the best thing we can do.

In my opinion, doing things like writing this has helped me grow in my own cybersecurity knowledge. I think presenting on topics you know about can also teach you. You may have questions you don't know the answer to or opinions you haven't thought of.

In my experience mentoring is a wonderful thing. It is an incredible social work that brings you a lot of satisfaction and fulfilment. New people are inspiring, motivated and eager to learn, even if they are sometimes a bit lost. It seems to me a job that deserves more recognition, as it plays a very important role in the professional development of the future of the sector and is often undervalued.
