I would start with mastering the soft skills of empathy and humility. The line between arrogance and confidence is thin. Err on the side of humility to attract mentors, which brings me to my second point: Take every opportunity for mentorship. Good engineering is all about maximizing the work not done. I learn a lot from my own mistakes, but I learn more from the mistakes of those much smarter than me, which brings me to my final point: Work with collaborators you find more skilled than yourself (see humility earlier in post). It's hard to improve yourself and your surroundings on your own. Pairing with folks more skilled than you will lead you to more visible, higher value work, worthy of recognition.

Include a test plan in your software design. If you don’t know how to come up with a good test plan, find a mentor who can coach you here. Then, when implementing, actually write tests. This is the hard part. It will take lots of time, but will save many headaches and will immediately set you apart as someone who is serious about writing reliable code the first time, and that’s a valuable reputation to foster.

- Demonstrate that you can logically explain how different parts of the code communicate harmoniously. - Be able to explain why you believe adopting implementation X, Y, Z is the best approach. - Always base your discussions about code on concrete examples. - Show clear code that follows good principles like SOLID, DRY, among others, so that others can understand it without having to decipher puzzles. - Most importantly (it may seem trivial and obvious, but it’s not): develop the ability to think clearly. Writing well-designed code is a direct reflection of your ability to model, abstract, and translate real-world processes.

You should consider an internship if you are just getting started. This is a great way to learn from more senior designers, and also an opportunity to grow your portfolio. Having a great portfolio will lead you to new opportunities.

Actively seeking out opinions from colleagues, mentors, or your audience allows you to gain diverse perspectives and uncover areas for enhancement. By viewing feedback as a tool for learning rather than criticism, you can better align your work with best practices.

Asking for feedback demonstrates to your reviewers that you are not afraid of their comments, but then you have to listen and accept the feedback you receive. This may mean reworking a solution you really like, but you have to open your mind to learning why the reviewers feel your solution needs fixing. You got to have fun writing it once (maybe you were even paid to write it), now you get to write it again (and they'll pay you for the re-write too!)

Be sure to properly give credit to others who contributed to your designs or solutions. Be sure not to take credit for other people's ideas. Be prepared to be a part of the solution to any problems you report to the team. It's not just about the "fun" work of writing the code. Becoming known as someone who can be relied upon to ensure that all the grunt work also gets done will make you stand out to your team leadership.
