In my experience three steps are important toward integrating new hires in teams: a friendly greeting and acquaintance with the rest of the team members, the assignment of a mentor or buddy who can guide them through the workplace culture, setting and defining clear expectations according to their roles and responsibilities and how these relate to the organizational and team's goals, last but not least a comprehensive training both of hard and soft skills.

From my experience, I've witnessed countless new hires struggle with the initial "lost at sea" feeling. But a well-designed onboarding program can transform them into engaged navigators. It's not just about the handshake and generic email – onboarding is an investment in the organization's future. Position new hires as heroes in the organization's story, equip them with clear roadmaps for success, and provide trusted advisors like mentors and buddies. Documented onboarding plan bifurcating the tasks day by day with clearly highlighting the expected outcomes will set the tone for new joiners. This should include the point of contact for any clarities if required. Make sure these documents contains frequent check-ins from designated team member, who can provide Realtime feedback and offer divers solutions. This detailed document will be helpful for staff for clear expectations with guideline if required and outcome expected from staff during 1st few months. Also, continues review by the management will help to make sure these expectations are realistic, aligned with business needs and manageable for new joiners.

First thing, give detailed job expectations to new recruits. Set the timeline schedule and train them to follow timeline. Provide basic training to handle and work on a project in corporate environment. As it is said, " As you sow, so shall you reap!" , so same saying goes in corporate culture to make new recruits adjust and learn.

This should be common knowledge, however, it rarely happens during on onboarding! Organizations should be intentional and measure what they value in a position, and then communicate that expectation from the first interview throughout the employee life cycle.

Allow plenty of room for failure! It tales on average 21 days to form a habit, so the team member will need lots of room to make mistakes. But with every attempt will come a success, a small part of the process they are beginning to perfect or remember every time, so bundle in lots of praise and help them see they are progressing.

The new hires comes with varied skill set and culture. We have to provide continuous support till they settle with the new process and culture. Regular feedback from reporting manager will help the new hire to perform their duties in the required direction. HR and learning team will provide consistent support by identifing gap in skill set and provide the required training so that within a year he/she will start performing in their role.

Feedback is critical for new joiners so that they can ask for the challenges observing during onboarding. Asking them both formally and informally about how they are progressing towards onboarding plays pivotal role to feel them empowered and understand the culture. Absolutely essential. In many organizations I have worked with/consulted, I have seen this lacking. Companies onboard the new hires with lot of fanfare, and form the next day,, it's all forgotten. Sustaining the momentum is absolutely critical. Post on-boarding, the team should have a 6 month- 1 year plan, and have regular interventions and check points in between. Implementing regular 1:1 meetings, make giving and receiving feedback more structured and effective. Encourage a culture where feedback is seen as a tool for growth rather than criticism.

In my experience, having a right-seat ride with comparable roles and specified mentor-time is critical to integrating the new hire into the team. Especially, introductions and time with the appropriate Employee Resource Group. Let the individual team members explain AND show what they do as well as explain how the new teammate's contributions will improve the team's productivity.

So many great suggestions that are spot on from my experience on boarding employees. I’ll add that we often consider training in the classroom and more product and process related but after that is done then adding programs for new employees like buddy/mentor time with a longer term employee, lunch n learns with topics that can be new to employees and they can hear from others that participate in them and also ground rules, norms and “sop’s” framework with their new leader and peers is a difference maker for engaged onboarded employees vs onboarded employees.

This is where your support comes in to ensure that they may still be able to engage in professional development and they will not be totally discouraged.

The onboarding programs aim is to have a positive integration of new talent in the organization. As per my experience there are 3 important aspects to ensure that the new Talent gets a right cognitive messages based on the observations I.e the environment around should be positive. The physical attention to the new talent from the routine as to access to premises to knowing important places and not felt lost. Third and important check on alignments of personal values to organizational and teams value system. The information, training alignment, buddy, directions on work are all important programs to drive. As mentioned look the personal aspects Cognitive, Physical and emotional to be addressed satisfactorily updated.

Keep the gap between what is promised and what is delivered. Most of the times gap between what is said and what is on the ground triggers feeling of less effective on-boarding
