Access control is actually the most critical control domain of all controls. As it doesn't really matter how much you invest in technologies , people and processes. if you get your access control strategy wrong, the rest of your controls are going to be weak. It starts with designing controls around authentication, authorization and then logging and monitoring of users and systems. There are different access control methodologies, and models depending on the inherent risk of an environment. For user and system authentication process to be stringent, this will include combining and layering of factors; what you know, what you have and what you have.
