It’s been exciting to connect with and learn from the community at the first Little Legs Big Heart Skeletal Dysplasia Conference this weekend in West Palm Beach, Florida. In addition to hearing from members of the community, we had the opportunity to share updates about our research in #achondroplasia and #hypochondroplasia. Thanks to Kristen DeAndrade and The Little Legs Big Heart Foundation for organizing this event and inviting us to be part of it. We were also proud to see one of our RARE Scholars recipients, Jiayi (Bryan) Yan, at the conference presenting his research on the lived experience of adults with achondroplasia. Thank you, Jiayi, for sharing your insightful work.

The London chapter of our Black Employee Resource Group (BERG) recently organized an event for employees featuring David Olusoga, a prominent British-Nigerian historian, author and filmmaker. The event was held in honor of Black History Month, recognized every October in the U.K. Discussing this year’s theme – Reclaiming Narratives – David provided examples of work he and other historians are doing to reframe past misrepresentations of Black communities and individuals and honor their contributions to society. We’re grateful to David for sharing his perspective on this topic, and to our BERG team in London for coordinating a meaningful learning opportunity for employees. “I’m the oldest living Alpha in my family, and nothing’s changed, really, except for a diagnosis. The only hope that I’m going to have is going to be a therapy. I want to be a part of that." Kristin is the Pediatric and Rare Liver Diseases Program Director at the Global Liver Institute and a dedicated advocate for people living with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). Her family history and personal journey with AATD underscore the critical need for research enabling the development of new treatment options for those living with this genetic condition, which can impact the lungs and/or liver.
