Tableau is one such tool that can be easily learned and deployed to analyze and present visually your data to provide actionable insights to your client or business partner. Tableau can basically replace PowerPoint, except it allows the client or business partner to interact with the presentation to examine various alternative scenarios. With PowerPoint, you would have needed to provide additional appendices outlining the scenarios, bulking up the slide deck as a result. Tableau solves that.

A budget overrun often sets off alarm bells, but there are instances when that could be a good thing. In my prior support of R&D, I find the team may overrun a budget, but on closer examination, the reason for the overrun may be because the team has accelerated patient recruitment for a clinical study. In so doing, the team has brought the potential drug approval date forward, and as such, the earlier realization of earnings to the company: A budget overrun today for earlier profits earned tomorrow. In such cases, I work with the team to cover the overrun with funds from another dept. In Finance, we usually have the means to siphon funds from elsewhere to cover these types of legitimate overruns.

The pharmaceutical industry in which I work faces some of the most critical challenges than any other industry; the challenges that come from regulators and policy makers. As such, in the Finance function our ears and eyes are forever focused on the external landscape. Hence, learning new tools and analytical techniques is the order of day. Needed are analyses to meet these challenges head-on with business insights our business leaders can use to preemptively circumvent these challenges and come out ahead, still profitable.
