If you’re going to speak on a topic, you need to have an in depth understanding of it paired with passion. You must understand your audience and how to tailor your material to get them to not only understand stand it but, to believe in it. We have all seen speakers who were “voluntold” to present something but didn’t have an intimate knowledge of the subject. When questions arise and they don’t know their stuff, their credibility takes a hit along with the organization they represent. Speakers can’t fake it and pretend they know more about the content than they do. Do the work and research your stuff before trying to speak on a topic and be able to back up what you’re presenting.

Rehearse your speech or presentation to refine your articulation and delivery. Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself to identify areas for improvement in pacing, tone, and body language.

When I managed teams, I often gave a topic for various team members to train on and share with team mates. This action taught the trainer study skills, speaking skills and confidence as each team member was assigned this role. Ultimately, this practice helped the team have more effective interaction with customers. Did they know the material forwards and backwards? NO! But they knew more than the rest of the team and that was sufficient for this exercise.

I used to be a rambler. I'd get the opportunity to share my opinion or run a meeting, and I'd just word vomit. This wasn't because I didn't have anything good to say, and it's not because I didn't practice enough, it's because I had TOO much to say. I turned to podcasting to flex this muscle, to get it all out, and then was I able to metaphorically trim the fat. The bonus of this was that I had a ton of fun in my pursuit of becoming a better speaker, but also doubled as a great networking and future business strategy. I still break out into a sweat when I present or speak on a panel, but my delivery and content are 10x better because I turned to podcasting versus 'typical' means of practice.
