They say you should listen more than you speak & I agree. This is the way to get ahead, allow others to feel seen & take in valuable information. All too often, while others are speaking, we are concocting our response or waiting for the right moment to interject our thoughts about what they have shared. Instead of jumping to share an "I" statement as a response, ask a probing question instead. This prompts your conversation partner to elaborate and shows that you are interested in them, not in expressing your own ego. Deep listening requires you to focus completely on the other party with genuine presence & interest. It sets a firm foundation for future conversations and ensures that you are prepared & well-versed in their point of view.

Solemos pensar que compartir ideas y hacer propuestas es entregarnos a la conversación y la co-creación. Sin embargo, debemos tener en cuenta el poder que tienen las preguntas para poder diferenciar el "proponer" del "indagar" dado que en la indagación damos lugar a que quien recibe la pregunta pueda pensar, reflexionar y aprender. Al mismo tiempo, nosotros logramos conocer las percepciones del otro y sus puntos de vista. En nuestras conversaciones debemos combinar las propuestas (que nacen de nuestros punto de vista) con las indagación. Esto nos permitirá ser más creativos, resolutivos e innovadores.

Being curious is a skill that will never let you down in professional settings. As you deal with leaders at ever higher levels, asking questions becomes even more important. Being thoughtful about your questions lets the leader know that you are listening and interested what they are saying. Be sure not to only ask questions, since you also have an opinion and should add to the conversation by building on the other person's comments if possible.

One night I decided to attend a networking event where all I would demonstrate a true, genuine curiosity for learning about everyone I met and ask as many questions to learn about others. There was a truly interesting senior lawyer I met and for about 25 minutes I asked him question after question - his career path was filled with interesting experiences. When it was time to part ways, he put his hand on my shoulder and said: I come to a lot of these things and I think that's the best conversation I've ever had - even though he had not asked me a single substantive question. This interaction always reminds me that people are not impressed by credentials or flashy personalities - we remember those who make us feel seen and appreciated.
