There are a lot of automation options available even in other applications as well. But for this, one should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the steps involved to produce a particular output. Troubleshooting any error after running the actions script is a must.

Someone that's helped me over the years, as a video producer/editor, is creating reusable motion graphic & text templates (mogrt), as those repetitive tasks take time over the course of a week, month, etc. Plus, taking a blank project and customizing the file organization and saving that as a template. That way, all my bins and files (including reusable elements) are already there, waiting for me. Also, using batch exports when creating multiple versions of a final deliverable.

I agree, using DAM systems for digital asset management is one of the best methods for maintaining a file system where everything is organised. For smaller organisations versioning and file numbering can be done manually for each specific Brand/Client folder and starting the file name with V-01, V-02, ....etc.

I used an older program called Facillis at a previous job and since I had never used a program like that before, I wasn't sure what it's purpose was, really. Then I was told to think of it as a search engine for everything on the media server, and it so made sense. Once I realized how well you could catalog and organize all the video and graphics for every project, while also maintaining a general common elements database, I loved having it. I wish I had one at my current job.

Yes it's true but there are some Pro's and Con's of upgrading the application. So, before upgrading one needs to do some research before upgrading as it may lead to a chaotic situation if some of the features of the application stops working as intended. For example, Adobe removed the support of the popular PANTONE colour ink swatch system from the newer release. Now, we need to subscribe separately for Pantone digital color books to work with colours.

You should not necessarily be loyal to your bank if another bank offers you better terms. Hence, you should not be to afraid to explore new software, solutions or upgrades. Luckily, much of the media content is now cross-platform compatible.

I was at the the YouTube Event all through out last week and one of the tools I learnt about is a tool that changes an audio language in my video to any other language of my choice and guess what? When optimizing, both human and tech need to be considered. Case in point, I had a customer that had the fastest servers, and super fast workstations, but video exports were still taking extraordinarily long times. We upgraded their network and immediately saw a 9x decrease in export times. Optimizing needs to examine the entire workflow, for bottlenecks and how to alleviate them. Often times the challenge is one of not knowing what else is out there to optimize, where the challenge is "that's the way we've always done it" where new technologies can eliminate entire chains-of-tasks, freeing work to flow from one step to another without a human having to perform that labor.

I agree. Productivity is less about tool and more about state of mind. It’s a lot like being a parent. You can sit down and have a chat with the kids. Go for a walk with them and talk about the small thing. Or you can try to sort out the laundry, the dishes, the hoovering, the candlelight dinner, the pillows and wash the car. You need to choose what’s really important. Distractions all seem equally important at the minute… are they, really?

For efficient media processes with today's workflows, it is often times required that at least one staff member be assigned to manage the flow of data. A library manager as an example can assist at all levels of ingest, editorial and archiving to ensure that data is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. This position can serve as a part-time role for small organizations, or may be a multi-person team for large businesses, but the role is essential. This person may also be the best to oversee and advise on workflow changes as they would have a top-down view of where bottlenecks lie in the workflow.
