Emotional Intelligence is one of the top key advantages among high performers in Manufacturing Operations. Self-awareness: When someone isn’t, that gets noticed. Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost… it shows. Self-management: Same thing. On time? Focused? Clear headed under pressure? Self-management will show. Social Awareness: Huge. Folks who get promoted tend to have this down. Ability to listen, work with different styles, speak “upward” professionally, speak “for” others who struggle to be heard? This will be noticed for sure. Relationship Management: Another big one. Excellence in this comes from the other three. Drama wastes time and costs money, so become a master of relationships and you are the leader in the room already.

Remember that in manufacturing, like in other businesses, you MANAGE processes but you LEAD people. During my career, I have always been surprised by the number of people who were in leadership positions who felt like the people leadership aspect of their job was a burden to be overcome. If this is you, I encourage you to evaluate why you were put in this position and reflect on what it means to be entrusted to lead others. If your team doesn't trust you, there's no amount of metrics you can put in place that will move the needle in the long run. Focus on understanding your people, what drives them, and what is in their best interest. Do this even if it means a temporary setback from pushing their performance: it will be an investment.
