Here's how you can enhance your decision making skills as a leader.

For me, decision-making comprises five steps. The first step is hypothesis formation, which helps my mind conjure the importance of allocating resources toward making a decision. The next step is data collection/data validation. Once all data is collected and validated, we move on to step three which is data analysis. Step four is the formation of insights and conclusions. The final fifth step is action planning.

When we make a decision, we are making a judgement. If we are making a judgement, what are the criteria we are making that judgment against? Write down the criteria that are being used for this decision. Also useful is the Cartesian Analysis What will happen: If we do this? If we don’t do this? What Won’t happen: If we do this? If we don’t do this? Not for every single decision of course.

Let me try making that straight forward for elevating decision-making we should first embrace diverse viewpoints , concurrently need to have a good hands on meticulous data analysis , alongside driving open communication & remaining adaptable to feedback and new insights. If we are able to inculcate this we see ourself growing as a leader .

There are different ways people take decisions. Some need lots of data and analysis, some rely on past experiences and little current information & circumstances and some just take on the fly as they feel they are adaptable and need to move fast and will take different directions or tweak if needed on the way. Some even take as others says or with collaborative discussion as it sounds correct and proven way or majority say so as right. None of these ways are right or wrong. Infact all these ways are applied but intensity of the same varies with your personality. The important is that as a leader you are that lot who has no choice to wait but take decisions and move on as many follows you or many other decisions are on the way to act on.

Weigh all the facts from 4 business perspectives: Financial, Technical, User, and Executive. Then evaluate the ramifications for inaction in each category. This creates "Professional Discontent", the compelling reason to act. When practical, pull in the stakeholders in each of the 4 perspective areas to assure accuracy and generate buy-in.

Making decisions is not difficult. We make thousands of them a day. The problem resides in making the “right” decisions. This can often cripple people. By having goals, you are giving yourself a filter for right and wrong decisions. “Does this align with my goal” is much easier than “is this the right thing”.

Make sure that you are also evaluating what type of goals you are establishing. In short, you need to understand whether these are meaningful goals or not. Many people will set a goal because of something that just popped into their mind and they had an immediate, albeit fleeting, interest. However, over time (sometimes just minutes later) that interest just goes away. Now you are left with a goal that you've made that you have no real intentions of achieving. There are a large number of people who also set goals because it is what they see others doing. The goal is not of value to them, rather just something they believe others think they should try to accomplish. If you want to succeed, set meaningful goals... not just any goals!

It is necessary to understand both the immediate and long-term risks associated with different options and the importance of considering potential downsides alongside benefits. Risk-taking is sometimes required for growth and progress, but one needs to be prepared for any outcome by evaluating risks beforehand to mitigate them effectively. This approach can lead to more confident decision-making and better outcomes in various contexts, whether in personal, professional, or organizational settings, serving as a valuable reminder of the role risk assessment plays in making informed and strategic decisions.

John Boyd's OODA loop - Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. One of the best decision-making tools any leader can utilize @ every level, especially when time is of the essence, and risk is unmitigated. It's a repetitive formula that serves well those seeking to remain agile, disruptive and highly efficient.

The four most important words for a leader... "what do you think?" I learnt this very early on in my leadership career and I have never forgotten its significance. Most importantly, asking others their opinions requires a skill of selecting the right people to ask as well as knowing how best to frame the questions! After many years, I still gravitate towards those that display sound judgement, even though they may provide me with a response that runs counter to my assessment. Most importantly, I seek those who are then able to "workshop" a way forward that, through discourse, brings out the best of their approach with the best of others including myself. It is ultimately through discourse that the best possible way forward can be found.

If it's feeling lonely at the top, it's time to start building a network of support - this is something I am doing right now. This it is not easy to do! Some of the best leaders I know don't skip a beat when they don't know the answer to something - they say when they don't know or when they don't understand and then go off on a hunt to find the answer or gain clarity. If you can seek advice from a place of curiosity versus fear, it'll be life changing. Every one knows something that I don't know and I never want to stop trying to figure out what those things are. This approach keeps me sharp and learning. Lastly, don't hesitate to give advice in return, you earned your spot for a reason!

Seeking advice is a powerful tool for leaders. It opens the door to diverse perspectives, uncovers blind spots, and introduces new solutions that might not have been considered otherwise. This encourages a culture of collaboration and ultimately leads to more informed and effective decisions. Embracing advice can have a positive impact by showing others their perspectives are valid and appreciated.

Seeking advice is imoportant, even though it is not always possible in the spur of the moment. An example is when your unit is under attack, and you need to make split second decisions. Going the extra mile to get advice from others is not always possible, this is when the data, decision training, analysis and knowledge of your trade comes into play.

Although instincts can be the most valuable input, they are sometimes misunderstood or at best, overlooked. Few people have learnt how to really listen to that voice whispering inside. To cultivate this relationship with your instincts: - Ask directly - Stop and listen for the answer - Answers come in many forms, shapes and sizes - Observe your body. It knows way before your mind what you actually need and where you need to go. - Reflect on outcomes to strengthen the causal relationship

We need to ask ourselves is this my instinct or is this a fear-based (or past based) response to something? Fear or association with how something went negatively in the past has no relation to how it could go in the future. Unless it was a lesson we needed to experience to gain the wisdom, which now drives the instinct. I've seen a lot of clients stuck on the past and how it went then, which blinds them into seeing all the possibilities of a new outcome. I've also seen clients ignore their instincts and then regret doing so....which is a lesson in itself. I've experienced both for myself as well - which is why I believe it's crucial to discern instinct from negative association to a previous outcome. What a great skill for us to master.

While data and analysis are essential, leaders should also trust their instincts and intuition when making decisions. I always encourage leaders to tap into their inner wisdom, gut feelings, and intuition as valuable sources of guidance and insight. Cultivate self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and mindfulness practices to better connect with instincts and intuition. Pay attention to subtle cues, body sensations, and emotional responses when evaluating options and making decisions. Balancing analytical reasoning with intuitive insights to make holistic and balanced decisions is critical to tap into the innate wisdom and make decisions that resonate with values, beliefs, and vision.

Over the years what has worked for me has been : 1. Look at facts and not opinions 2. Gather data but trust my instincts 3. Seek role models and observe 4. Lastly trust in oneself that even if thinks don’t go our way - it’s ok.

Ultimately, as the decision-maker you are responsible for your own decisions. Listening to advice or not is a decision too. Knowing yourself well enough to recognize you have blind spots and biases is important to be able to counterbalance those. Data is important and seeking information in the right places a sign of maturity and competency. Realization that there may be no perfect amount of advice or data coming your way before you need to take that decision - a simple reality of management.

Continual learning is the key to decision-making in the New World Order. When complexities override normed scenarios, the collective wisdom and knowledge stock enables the discovery of underlying logic and, thus, decision-making.
