Almost every statistical software will have a tutorial or guide on their basics, which usually have some overlap. My time with SPSS, MATLAB and Minitab and repeated trainings with each software reinforced my understanding of the basics, though going through an online guide and practicing with just one software will suffice. A solid understanding of the foundation makes data analysis many folds easier at more complex levels.

shifting from a workplace that primarily used simple tools like excel for recording and analyzing data, to a workplace that primarily used R and R studio for data collection and analysis as well as documentation was an exciting challenge, as previously my experience in the R environment had been only in academia. However, it allowed for much more deep analysis of my groups data and revelation of many trends that would have gone unnoticed. Integrating a new environment and programming language also grew my skills and confidence in data analysis and visualization that transferred to more effective communication across teams.

I agree! Reading literature might be one of the best ways to improve critical thinking in the field. Reviewing publications thoroughly makes one analyze data and research methods carefully. It helps one spot the strengths and weaknesses in arguments, giving a better understanding of the subject. One way is to critique every paper and come up with atleast 5 things that the paper could improve on. This helps one develop different perspectives and challenges their ideas. Lastly, combining information and writing a summary of a publication might help form a well-rounded evidence based conclusion.

I believe Jay Sharma gave a very valuable insight into practicing critical thinking. However, I owe my final year project supervisor for his explanation on how best to analyze or critically evaluate my data/results. And that was, "Questions". More specifically, the question "Why" which takes data at the surface level and delves into their meaning, their relation to other data and thus, is what significantly helps transform data into information.

I never comprehended the true extent of the different analytical techniques (and just for one dataset in my lab at that time) but meeting and observing others work helped me improve my ability to understand and refine my (somewhat primitive) data analysis. I even learnt basic coding that helped me process more patient data and do so more accurately, thanks to a PhD student I spent many afternoons of my research project with. So I encourage anyone to go out there to be open minded and willing to be wrong to be better.
