Often when you meet a founder, department head or even a senior manager and try to talk to them, you feel a sense of urgency in the manner of speaking, trying to solve the problem quickly and this tendency in itself causes problems. The only way to communicate effectively is to listen effectively, listen to all the challenges, all the apprehension, all the ideas and follow up with questions and then respond back with the complete picture in your mind. There is truly both an art and a science to asking questions, and then carefully listening to the answer. Whether in a negotiation, in a courtroom, in a lab following the scientific method, or waging a debate - the best questions elicit the best answers and lead to the best decisions. You know you have hit the sweet spot when, as Jeffrey Gitomer tells us, the person responds with, "No one has ever asked that question before." When people do not feel appreciated or heard, their most common response is to shut up. And most introverts are unlikely to speak again. They are comfortable remaining silent, even if they see looming disaster. Interrupting is rude, boorish, and nothing short of acting the bully. You might NOT be the smartest person in the room, or have the best idea, or know the right process to follow. You only THINK you do. Interrupting shuts down the dialog. Keep the information flowing as obstruction free as you can. Even novices can have significant insight. Give them a chance to learn to express it. THAT is real leadership development.

Both tough love & constructive criticism are very important parts of feedback. In my experience, however, too often those offering such feedback tend to forget to include the love & constructive parts of their rant. To be useful, feedback must frame the situation accurately (or reframe it in a helpful way), specify the conduct that was observed (even when the actor did not intend that interpretation), and then offer alternatives to the way a person may have acted or expressed themselves to better convey their intent, make sure it was understood by those listening, and be positioned to take definitive action to improve. Never be the constant critic. And never waste time trying to fix every little nuance of someone else. Heal yourself first!
