Finding passive candidates, those who are not actively looking for a job, requires a different approach than finding active job seekers. Here are a few simple steps: Build Genuine Relationships: Attend industry events, join professional groups, and connect with people in your field. Use Diverse Resources: Not all candidates use LinkedIn or WhatsApp. Explore other platforms such as industry specific forums, alumni networks, or niche job boards to find potential candidates. I've been attracting passive candidates into roles for many years and I believe with the combination of just enough information in the approach, a great company & role to attract them into, then it really isn't too difficult. I take a quality over quantity approach and make my approach personal by recording a video bringing the role to life. Recruitment really isn't rocket science.

A tailored approach is super important. Especially with the world of AI where everything is starting to be super general and automated. I cannot even count how many times I get a reach out that says “we want to talk to you about your current experience with Addison Group, a company I have not been at for several years. If you are going to put in the effort to do cold outreach at the very minimum make sure the detail in your message is up to date and accurate.

Watch your recycling- reusing previous messages is fine, but make sure any personalized information is either updated or removed. Referencing an accomplishment at XYZ co. to a candidate that never worked there is a big uh-oh. You have 3-5 seconds. Make them count.

This is my favorite! When I reach out to candidates that are not actively on the market, I point out the growth potential, professionally and personally. If you are in a position or a company too long, you maybe missing out on learning new things and the opportunities to grow. I encourage candidates to look at smaller companies and startups. This offers the opportunity to have more of an impact and be able to grow into new positions or wear multiple hats. Growth only happens when you have to stretch and solve complex problems.

First question I ask any candidate is what their motivations are. This should be then aligned with the opportunity - rather than just selling the role to the person.

Stop worrying about what the company needs and focus on what your connections need. Your goal as a Recruiter should be to have every candidate thank you for putting them into the best job they've ever had thus far in their career. That doesn't happen if you shoehorn the wrong candidate into a role to try and make it work. Be honest with the perks of the role and company and find a candidate that shares a similar win strategy. You can recruit for companies that say it sucks to work here but we pay above market or you could recruit at companies that say we don't have a lot of money so we'll give a candidate an experience they can't get anywhere else. You can find great candidates for any scenario if you understand your candidates needs.

Time. You have to make and take the time to dig into a candidate’s motivations. Truly understanding why they were open to a conversation about a new career opportunity. Relieving the pressure; ensuring that candidates understand the control is with them and you are seeking their “right” opportunity for them. Passive candidates are running to something, not away from something.

Exploratory conversations are key! It’s about THEM and what they are looking for in their careers. Learn about them, their goals, their motivators, drivers and the parts of the job they love, as well as the parts they want to step into in the future. Being able to speak about the industry, or market trends, and add value to how they imagine crafting their future career… This is what sets you apart as a recruiter to network with! These are the recruiters that passive candidates want to have in their corner. The ones looking out for their next big move! Not the ones trying to make them do the same exact job in a different company.

A tactic I use is activating candidate’s own network. If the role isn’t right for you, can you recommend someone who might be a good fit? They might not be actively looking but become interested as they learn more about the role.

Live by the Golden Rule. If you treat a passive candidate like you would want to be treated, you are much more likely to EARN their trust, and interest.
