Effective communication is a crucial part of an engineer's role. Engineers are required to understand technical detail and convey it in understandable (mostly detail free) form to investors, funders, regulators and so on at the same time as they need to be talking numbers to their tech peers. For example, very detailed deal-related technical due diligence will be the engineer's responsibility; but the information will then need to be expressed in a form that management and investors can grasp. This is sometimes perceived to be a "dumbing down" process - it isn't. Its a way of conveying specialized knowledge to extremely clever people that lack the specialized background and access to the specialist jargon. It is a valuable skill.

Community engagement is very often as crucial to project success as management and peer engagement, and projects often break down because insufficient attention is paid to it. For natural resource projects of all kinds, community town hall engagements (whether face to face or online) might be organised by a stakeholder management team, but they should always have engineering support. I have seen two multi-hundred-million dollar projects break down because communication failed, in each case because the affected communities felt that they had been patronised, that the developer regarded them as being incapable of understanding the engineering of the project they were hosting.

If you are an engineer and you are NOT thinking about sustainability, then you need to correct that situation quickly or leave town. Keep in mind that sustainable practices are the responsibility of everyone in an organisation - if its not sustainable, the organisation will eventually disappear. And sustainability is definitely not only an engineer's territory - unsustainable financial or security or compliance or SHE or HR etc etc practices can sink a developer as quickly as bad engineering. A good discipline for any organisation is to compile an annual sustainability report, where sound practices can be documented and, in the process of compilation, grossly unsound practices can be easily identified.
