Here's how you can enhance collaboration with other team members using problem-solving skills.

Active Listening... A seemingly easy thing. But to cut the clutter of thoughts to listen with empathetic attention to record views without opinion is not as easy as one thinks... At leadership level I think it's an amazing skill. Never easy to park our pre-dominion thoughts and giving an absorbing approach. Important is to cut diversions to discussion objectives, to stay purposeful and associative.

Active listening is an important skill that one should possess when dealing with people. It motivates others to open up their minds and communicate effectively. They feel respected and valued when we listen to them with full attention. It creates a very safe space for anyone to share their thoughts without having any fear or concern.

This is probably the most underrated skill to have in the world of software development. Active listening doesn't only help you work more efficiently with the people around you, it also increases the report you have them them. When you're improving your relationship with the people around you they will value your opinion more and will feel safe to share their opinions as well. This creates an environment in which more opinions are shared, which leads to finding better solutions.

One thing I’ve found helpful as well is to repeat back what team members are saying, if the subject matter is more complex. Eg. “So if I’m understanding you correctly, you’re saying..” That framework allows for clarification - you may think you’re on the same page as the speaker but you may also not be.

In the past, when I had more new members on the team, such as interns and new college graduates (NCGs), I used to conduct silent brainstorming in groups of two. 1. Silent brainstorming gives them a chance to write down their ideas and build confidence before discussing them. 2. Pairing individuals creates a more intimate and less intimidating setting, encouraging quieter or less confident members to share their insights.

It is definitely helpful to call on other team members, if some in a meeting haven’t participated yet. They may not have felt like they’ve had an opening in the conversation or any other reason.

In this industry it can be hard to avoid referencing acronyms, but if you’re not sure of your audience it is best to explain what they mean. In addition, on the whole you should make sure everyone is clear on the concepts you’re discussing before you dive in. For example if you’re having a meeting brainstorming ways to improve the stack of an older application, don’t dive deep into talking about dependency injection frameworks if you have some in attendance that don’t know what DI is or its benefits.

I've learned that avoiding jargon and simplifying technical language helps bridge the gap between different knowledge levels on the team. Explain complex concepts using analogies or examples, ensuring everyone can contribute. This clarity smooths out bottlenecks in the problem-solving process, ensuring that everyone aligns on the solution path.

Collaboration becomes easy when there is clear communication of ideas and thoughts with your team. Most times, lack of clear communication can bring the team apart and stop a project halfway as a software engineer. You must communicate clearly and effectively to your team so as to foster agreement.

In my experience this is a very useful tool when leading teams. You may come across something that you need to do but may be out of the comfort zone of some on the team (say something like unit test coverage) but it helps to reference the broader goals. (“as an engineering department we’ve made a commitment to improved code quality so we all want to pitch in on this”)

Having shared goals aligns the team towards a unified purpose. I always emphasize the importance of clearly defining objectives and demonstrating how each member’s contribution fits into the bigger picture. When the entire team has a clear understanding of the goals and a shared sense of purpose, they're motivated to work collectively, combining their skills and overcoming obstacles together.

Companies have goals, teams have goals, people have goals. People strive for their goals so they can be motivated and businesses strive for their goals so they can thrive, these need to be aligned and shared transparently so both succeed together.

We held a kickoff meeting to define our shared goals and how each team member’s role contributed to these goals. This created a sense of ownership and accountability.

I’ve found that feedback is better received when you’ve acknowledged the effort that was put in by the individual. “Thank you for your work on ticket #xyz, there is a lot of good things in your PR. However a couple things are missed here that I’d appreciate if you could resolve. Thanks again!” Assume that everyone is working their hardest and go in with a mindset of gratitude for the effort while steering them in the correct direction.

Constructive feedback fosters a culture of continuous learning. I've seen that framing feedback around specific examples and improvement suggestions leads to more productive responses. Encourage receiving feedback with an open mind; it's not criticism but a growth opportunity. With consistent constructive feedback, teams adapt better and develop stronger problem-solving abilities.

Provide feedback that is specific, actionable, and focused on behaviors rather than personal attributes. Encourage a culture where feedback is seen as an opportunity for growth.

Empathy builds trust and strengthens collaboration. I've found that acknowledging teammates' perspectives and emotions helps in navigating conflicts and finding common ground. When colleagues feel understood, they are more inclined to contribute creative solutions and navigate challenges together. An empathetic approach creates a positive environment that drives collaborative problem-solving forward.

By taking the time to understand individual team members' perspectives and challenges, we built stronger relationships and a more supportive team environment.

Focussing on solutions instead of problems can help teams to collaborate to deal with challenges. In my experience, this distinction often sets apart high-performing individuals or leaders within a team. They emphasize finding solutions and bringing people together to accomplish tasks.
