Here's how you can engage and inspire your teams using storytelling techniques.

Context provides the necessary background information that will help the team understand the significance and implications of the story. It makes the story relevant to them which is necessary to find the connection required for the story to be engaging and motivating. The intent of the story is to help the team draw lessons and insights to help them frame actionable points. The context will not only help your team to grasp the nuance but also to build a connection with you as the leader via the reflection that you share the same goals and challenges.

1. Storytelling w.r.t context of the communication. 2. I will primarily focus on the use cases while selecting the storyline. 3. Once Comtext is set and storyline is selected, I will use some benchmark examples coming out of previous organisation exp, peer- feedback from other organisation, internet /media news etc. 4. Keep it simple, relatable to day-to-day life and interactive. Monologue is not my method. 5. Add humor with add-on example to keep people engaged. I believe comedy and tragedy both have long lasting impact, however comedy makes in light to remember.

You must understand the specific or unique skill and knowledge of your team members. Setting the goal, objectives and planning of your work, / R & D or project. Then identify an analog story which closely related to your work, R & D or project and taking into account the specific or unique skill and knowledge of your team members. Example of analog stories are using how car runs or parts of car; using how computer works or its parts. The storytelling shall be presented in a plain and easy to understand language to make sure that all team members fully understand the goal. Lastly you can question the team member to find out the result of the storytelling.

One thing I have found is to be authentic. Tell a career story that is honest, real and relatable for them. Too often executives use experience that the team just cannot get their head around thus you will lack trust. This us the other key, true stories that you can back up. They will trust you and respect your leadership so show proof real live examples of what you say.

For example, in one project, I created "Techie Tara" to symbolize our brilliant developers. Seeing themselves in Tara inspired the team to tackle problems creatively and collaboratively.

Inspiring your team is important. Half of the work is done if your team is motivated to work and are inspired to become a hero sometimes tweaking the story to make it more relatable is important as well. Painting a picture of hero, that they look up to and then want to become like that is key in getting the desired outcome If you can set an example and something they are looking forward to , they will remain motivated

While I appreciate the power of storytelling, from a product development standpoint User Stories are all you need. Their simplicity is perfection. As a “user/hero if you want to be dramatic”, I want “action to perform”, so that “why does the hero want to do this/what conflict or problem are the trying to overcome”. That’s it. Combine these with the product vision, product goal, iteration goals, and epics to weave your own masterpiece. User stories are the most granular aspect of the product backlog never going deeper into tasks until teams are committed to building the feature/capability described by the story. The main purpose of the User story is to create a conversation amongst the team to fully understand what’s to be built.
