The smart goals/objectives should be guided by four organizational pillars namely: Financial Pillar, Stakeholders Pillar, Internal Process Pillar and Learning Pillar. The Financial pillar focuses on two major aspects: Maximizing production/scale and minimization of cost. The Stakeholders Pillar is about appropriate products and/or services for stakeholders as well as the relationship management therein. The Internal Process Pillar consists of enhancing core process The Learning Pillar focuses on Capacity Building or Continuous learning of all employees and other stakeholders involved in implementation or running an organization.

The type of organization will influence how one should go about defining goals. As a sole proprietor, I am focused on setting goals that will meet the needs of my clients. Conversely, a non- profit or public institution should create a detailed process of community engagement that includes all interested parties.

Making decisions is about ensuring you have everyone’s best interest at heart to achieve the collective goals. Additionally, make sure you’re clear and transparent about who is doing the decision making ahead of any engagement so there is understanding of roles and responsibilities. Misunderstandings and misconceptions about who makes decisions can lead to negative feelings that affect workplace culture.
