We often may not be able to identify issues or problems if we don't first develop the habit of asking relevant questions from an inquiring mind. As teachers, we can create teachable moments that challenges them to ask such questions, that typically feature the following characteristics: having a context, a framework and a focus.

One of the key practices we would recommend students learn at an early stage is the ability to obtain and evaluate information pertaining to any given situation or problem they are facing, then go beyond to communicate it to others. This involves critically evaluating the relevance and credibility of the information at hand. And in the age of Generative AI (GAI), this is a powerful practice to have if they were to become effective problem solvers in this 21st Century.

Problem-solving requires a mindset of examining multiple options. I think fostering brainstorming creates an environment where all ideas are valued and explored without judgement. This inclusive approach encourages student creativity and innovation and widens solution options. Reminding pupils not to dismiss ideas prematurely promotes critical thinking and alternative approaches. This stage teaches students to solve difficult problems in numerous contexts throughout their lives by establishing skill sets that go beyond current challenges. Using imagination to solve problems helps children build resilience and adaptability, which are crucial for success.

Helping students make decisions requires a balanced approach. I believe training kids to critically evaluate each answer develops analytical thinking and prepares them for real-world problems. Encouragement of trial and error helps kids understand that decision-making is iterative and involves learning from triumphs and failures. Remember that perfection isn't possible and that making informed decisions based on available information is crucial. This method improves students' problem-solving confidence and resilience and adaptability, which are crucial for handling academic and professional uncertainties. Early teaching of these skills gives kids confidence and a strategic perspective when making decisions.

The development of problem-solving skills depends on reflection. I believe that having pupils reflect on their behaviours improves their problem-solving skills. Help them identify what worked and what didn't and why. This critical self-assessment fosters a growth attitude that sees failures as learning opportunities.
