I recently taught a two day course course for law enforcement officers. That is 16 hours! I knew my subject well enough that I was able to fill the 16 hours with important and relavant information, but I failed to engage my audience. Next time I am going to practice public speaking - even take a course - on how to keep an audience attentive for hours - even days! Regardless of the value of your information, if they aren't listening, it's a waste of time and money for everyone. There are obviously "experts" out there who likely know less than I, but who keep the attention of their audiences - thus are far more effective than I was. Experts who wish to perform public speaking; learn some theatrics. Doesn't have to be hyperdrama.

My field is highly technical and complex - ever changing with many moving parts. It is essential to participate with experts in your field on regular basis or you will be teaching last year's knowledge when they brought you in to help get up to date or more clearly visualize the future in their field. Often times a student knows the information but the ways it is assessed impedes the evaluation. Being proactive also helps students remain calm and gives them the benefit of feeling more successful with their learning. Writing down clear directions, what information needs to be learned, different ways to present information, gives students smaller steps to gain information. Being proactive allows the teacher to preempt learning issues and situations, so the child can meet with success.
