The term 'geophysical exploration' does not specifically refer to O&G exploration; it also includes geothermal exploration, mineral & groundwater exploration. Mineral & groundwater exploration are in the realms of near-surface geophysics (NSG) which will be my focus. As a practicing near-surface geophysicist for more than 40 years, the keys to elevating your skills are : a strong grasp of the fundamentals/basic principles of the geophysical methods, deep passion and continuous learning. These will help you tremendously in your quest to enhance your skills & knowledge. At the same time, these will motivate you in your journey even if you face hurdles along the way.

When I started my career in the oil and gas industry, some of us started as seismic data processors while others went straight into interpretation. Many years later, I’ve always been glad to have been exposed to processing methods and workflows. Knowing the fundamentals of how seismic data is processed before being loaded onto my workstation has served me well throughout my career.

A thorough grasp of the theory is paramount, as it provides the necessary framework to properly interpret the data and draw meaningful conclusions. When you fully understand the theory, you gain invaluable insights into what parameters the geophysical techniques are actually measuring, and how the measurements relate to physical properties of the subsurface. This theoretical knowledge allows you to design field surveys that will capture the most relevant information to address the investigation's objectives. Furthermore, a strong theoretical grounding enables you to anticipate potential complications or ambiguities in the data. You can then proactively devise strategies to mitigate those challenges.

I have benefitted from starting from the basics of designing surveys with consideration of geology dips and strikes, weather condition. Indeed, at a later stage, the basis of seismic processing workflow we introduced before dipping my feet into seismic interpretation. This gives one an overall understanding of limitations and possibilities of seismic data.
