"I got this" is your ego's way of saying you don't need help, even if you're not 100% sure of the best path forward. Clear and effective communication with your "boss" is critical, especially in these situations. Be clear, be concise, provide your recommendations on how to move forward, and never, ever, hide from the moments when the train is running off the tracks. If your "boss" is aware, they may be able to help you find the best way. But if you aren't clear with them and the worst case happens.... you get the idea. Open communication is critical, but beyond that, clear communication rules all.

Effective communication can be achieved through various methods. One approach I use to keep my leader informed is by providing concise executive summaries. Another method I have used is the utilization of a shared OneNote or collaborative document. This system complements our one-on-one meetings, allowing either of us to add discussion topics or thoughts throughout the week, leading to our dedicated one-on-one. This ensures we don't waste time searching for reminders during our meetings and can collaboratively add comments and details. Furthermore, I can take notes during our meetings, documenting action items and decisions, and have a centralized place to revisit topics as needed. - The biggest thing however, is being prepared.

Another factor is timing. Timing is crucial; if your leader is facing a critical issue, be mindful of its urgency. If your matters are less pressing, consider postponing them for the greater good to allow your leader to handle the issue at hand.

Respect boundaries while managing up by understanding your role's limits and when to offer input or assistance. Maintain professionalism by supporting your boss without overstepping their responsibilities.

Something I find helpful is establishing responsibilities up front through direct communication. One could start the conversation like this, "I understand my role in this initiative to be ABC, where yours is XYZ. Does this align with your expectations?" Having conversations like this with your boss will foster trust and follow through on all important tasks at hand.
