Here's how you can effectively resolve conflicts as a leader.

Actively listen to all parties involved in the conflict without interrupting or jumping to conclusions, if pay attention to their perspectives, concerns, and emotions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand. Ask clarifying questions to ensure that you fully understand each party's point of view, then seek clarification on any ambiguous or unclear statements to avoid misinterpretation. Dig deeper to identify the root causes of the conflict, by look beyond the surface-level disagreements to uncover any underlying issues or interests that may be contributing to the conflict!

When seeking to understand the issues at play, ensure you suspend your existing biases and assumptions. Look at the issue from the perspectives of those experiencing the conflict situation. Also examine the organizational culture and power dynamics to determine how they have shaped the conflict dynamics. With this fuller understanding you can identify root causes and propose solutions that are more likely to be just and long lasting.

Leaders must be neutral - and must be perceived as neutral - by members of their team. Where a leader has a material history or connection with someone involved in the conflict, they should recuse themselves and allow another leader to help support the resolution. Despite their best intentions, where a perception of bias exists, the leader will face significant challenges in gaining trust of and credibility with the team. In addition to being neutral, they must also be objective. This requires them to genuinely listen to and consider the perspectives and experiences of everyone involved. Some team members want leaders to be 'their advocate' - and that is not a leader's role. The leader needs to consider and balance the interests of all.

This is how i approach conflict resolution: specially in this phase of Understanding the Issues: 1. Identify the underlying needs and interests: Go beyond the surface-level issues and explore what each party truly wants or needs. 2. Active listening: Show genuine interest in what others have to say and encourage them to share their thoughts fully. 3. Empathy: Try to see the situation from the perspective of each party involved. 4. Open Communication: Create a safe space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their views without fear of judgment. 5. Collaborative Problem Solving: Work together to find a solution that addresses the needs of all parties.

Even when wanting to understand the interests of each party, the resolution process begins with fairness, unbiased communication, and active-listening! Make sure everyone gets a turn to tell their side of the dispute, and always remember to remain as calm and as neutral as possible, throughout the entire process.

Once, I invited team members to share their views and proposed approach to a particular issue. The issue is clearly and narrowly defined. Possible example approaches and options were suggested but expressly stated to be non-exhaustive. In a virtual meeting, team members were invited to sketch out ideas on the jam board.

I've found out from my experience, that when collective decision making is encouraged at any level within an organisation, it leads to more creative and innovative solutions. Leaders should strive for transparency in decision-making processes, providing a clear rationale for actions taken. Moreover, they must demonstrate consistency in applying policies and addressing grievances. By upholding principles of fairness, leaders instil confidence in their ability to resolve conflicts impartially and cultivate a culture of trust and respect among team members.

Reflection is key to growth and innovation. An experience can be riddled with gems of wisdom when one steps back and reflects on what has occurred and how it was managed. The lessons learn can be brought to the next set of conflicts, to reinterate, reinforce or potentially eliminate any further ongoing conflict.

For Effective Resolution of Conflicts as a Leader... It could be that you may reflect upon past experiences, and how you worked through them, collectively. Aside from that; 1. Remember to listen with an 'unbiased' ear. 2. Hear each side with equal time and attention. 3. Don't jump to conclusions, do not assume. 4. Draw on 'lessons learned' from past experiences, what worked, what did not work, and why? 5. Consider, what personalities are you dealing with in the conflict, they are 'individuals' first. 6. Make a decision, check-in with all parties, and conclude rather than follow up, when feasible.

I would like to encourage everyone that let's build a culture of support where colleagues feel valued and understood. This can reduce the likelihood of conflicts arising. We can always have regular meetings to check in with staff and address any concerns before they escalate into larger conflicts.
