ETL has been the standard in the legacy data warehouses, but in the past few years I with the emergence of streaming data that’s not the case. So, it’s a flexible approach ETL, ELT, ETLT. Yes, the primary objective while choosing your technology should be to preserve your data according to the standards and then performance. Many of the batch processes run overnight in production. But performance (Big O) is a crucial factor in your batch process and also the technology used. Hence the rise of NoSQL databases.

Debugging is almost everything, indexing and types of indexes used is crucial. Clustered Indexes, combination indexing, explain plans & analyze. Also the types of scans(sequential, bitmap, index, heaps) and joins(nested, merge & hash). This along with writing excellent documentation will take a major part of your job role.
