A boss is a person just like everyone else and it is useless at times to work on things or in ways that don't support him. Showing interest when he is trying to teach something goes a long way to improving your standing. A clear example I recall is when teaching graduates FE analysis who instead of taking my advice decided to create shortcuts. They failed to realise that I was testing their skills. In order to meet expectations you must first know and comprehend what is expected and from there you can formulate a course of action. Personally I'm a list lover, as I like to see all my task laid out. I can then organize task based upon importance and tackle high-effort task first. In my experience, I have realized that you need to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses, that way you can be able to communicate timeliness with your boss, based on your strengths and weaknesses, for example, you might be an intelligent person, good with research and things that needs deep thinking, but on the other hand a slow person when it comes to typing and other things. So when you are aware of this two things, you know a project that need thinking and research will be finished quicker than the one that needs energy.
