Here's how you can effectively manage up to your boss in a retail sales career.

Understanding your bosses goals are always important, but take it a step further. Find ways to merchandise items that capture consumers attention more easily. Help those focus items to stand out. Even observing behavior patterns of your customers are important. What makes them stop and look at an item? Is the flow of traffic different, making a particular display not as important as before? Keep notes on what customers ask for. It helps to understand what product mix needs to be adjusted.

It's unlikely your boss will share their objectives with you. Observe their behaviors, what they focus on, and what they ask you (and others) to do. This will give you a sense of what's important to them, and they you can respond accordingly. My first retail boss would call me in last minute for a shift. The second time this happened, I told him I couldn't come in as I had to study for a test... He didn't call me again for six months, so from that moment on any time he called me in for a shift, I went. As a result he gave me more hours, and provided me the easier and more interesting jobs then others at my level of seniority.

When you share your opinions and observations, make sure to do it in a tone that is approachable. Meaning, you are not talking at them, you are just communicating the facts and they can react how they see fit.

If you find a more efficient way of doing something, share it with your colleagues. Help them maximize their time and efforts as well. It will not only increase your department's performance, but could increase others as well.

Initiative is rare. If you can sense what needs to be done, and do it (quickly) ahead of being asked, then you'll demonstrate initiative. The key however is not to immerse yourself in something, but rather small, quick actions that your boss will recognize, and that ensure you can stay on track with what you've been asked to do.

Reliability means your behaviors become predictable, and align with what your manager expects. If you listen to what you are told, and what you observe from your manager, then apply this to how you work, you'll be labelled as reliable. Most importantly, show up for work when expected, be five minutes early, take short breaks and do what is expected. When you create predictability, you become reliable.

In my experience, there is a fine line between offering effective feedback and "nagging" about details that don't quite hit the target. The following 3 ways have helped me trememdously: 1. Know and understand your boss's communication style. Do they prefer bulletpoints? One-on-one? Know when to use a call, email, or teams DM. 2. Timing is everything. 3. Drive it by data- Make a list or compile examples and offer the data if requested.
