In my experience, the best approach to understand the goal is to take the personal perspective out of the equation. What you may think is important may not be to your boss. When in doubt ask verifying questions to ensure there are no grey areas.

I would say this process doesn’t only work in technical support position but in every field. It’s important for providing a good result, to be in the same wavelength as your boss. Sometimes that is not easy but it is the right thing to do. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t share your thoughts or opinions in order to improve the work, but he will always be the captain who knows best where to steer the ship. Therefore, understand his/her goal or expectation is a requirement for a successful work.

Communicate, strategic moves, expected and desired outcomes as well as timelines for expected results, be transparent, including any mishaps or setbacks be sure to communicate that you have things under control, no blindside hits!!! When you need help, communicate that as well! Again, NO BLINDSIDE HITS IS CRITICAL! BEING IN SYNC/IN LOCKSTEP IS THE GOAL! - GIB! Make your team or department look as good as gold, strong and dependable!!!! Finally, understand your leader's communication style. I once reported to 5 managers with different communication styles!
