Staying abreast on emerging Technologies is the best advice for any modern Systems Engineering practitioner. Take advice or rent Tech Enthusiasts in different areas as needed. At the same time, check thoroughly if the technology is really matured enough. One of the generalized method is Technology Readiness Level TRL methodology. It is devised by NASA and can be used with a little bit of diligence in any components, subsystem and System Level consideration with varying degrees of success (more on component level). If TRL is lower than 5, high risk involved. Again it needs to weigh the impact or risk involved at system level before taking risk to utillize the technology advantages. System Engineer is jack of all trades. While system engineer's main role is to be an omnipresent entity , one also chooses the part of their interest. This is the part where a particular engineer likes to invest most of their time but remember , you are jack of all trades. Your expertise is not to be expert of every thing in detail but to be aware of (almost) everything and utilize that awareness for breaking the silos between the team and making the project a successful one. Systems Engineers therefore need to be able to handle a complex landscape of competing priorities and must leverage robust frameworks to put in place the right levels of cadence, assurance and structure to be able to execute effectively. Agility and consistency are key attributes needed for this type of work.
