What I like most is to repeat what was said in my own words. This shows the speaker that you were listening but also enables her / him to review if the message came accross correctly. e.g. "So, you would like me to spend more time on the actual code than on the design?"

Helpful to me is understanding it is always the perception of a problem. It is not a problem per fact but just the perception of the problem. It may very well be that the manager does not have as many facts about the problem as you may have

Important to me is to take time until a possible first emotional reaction has past on what was said. The reflection should happen with time and at least an emotional distance. However, your emotional reaction can teach you a lot as well. Include this in your reflection (why did this upset me so much) Something I learned: you would be angry if somebody told you the sky was green. You confident that its blue. You only get angry when there is the possibility of you being wrong
