Here's how you can effectively follow up after a job interview.

Email timing is different for everyone. I recommend asking during a job interview some version of this question: “When can I expect to hear back on a decision, and when would you recommend I follow up if it takes more time?” However worded, the intent is to get a feel for how quickly the interviewer(s) would feel comfortable with a follow-up email. In my experience, most are open to follow up shortly after their expressed timeline. But sometimes they know of roadblocks that may be delaying a decision and appreciate some extra patience. Either way, I prefer to take the cue from the interviewer(s).

Everybody will have a different approach but this is what I’ve personally practised and saw a positive impact. Send a thank-you email within 24 hours to express gratitude for the opportunity and to reiterate your interest in the position. Mention specific aspects of the interview that reinforced your enthusiasm and highlight how your skills align with the company’s needs. If you haven’t heard back after a week, consider sending a polite follow-up email to inquire about the status of your application and to reiterate your interest. Respect the hiring timeline provided during the interview, and avoid excessive follow-ups. But of course, this is not a standard for every role, you will have to understand cues from the team during the interview.

Timing is everything! A thank you within ideally 6-12 hours after your meeting shows tremendous drive and interest. Adding specifics on your meeting and why you are more interested after your meeting can definitely improve your position and potential to get the job you are interviewing for. Good luck!

Create only a draft template of follow-ups which has a scope for personalization! While you are in the process of following up, it will be very tempting for you to do it again and again until you have got a suitable response. However, it might not be received in the same manner as the receiver. The receiver might have their priorities scaled differently and hence shall not be as motivated as you are for the said engagement. In Business Communication, always put yourself in the receiver's shoes. Identify their communication pattern and preferences patiently. Always gauge the receiver's tone and identify their interest before following up. Having a human-like conversation will yield the best results!

Restating your value proposition is huge. But first adding why you want to work at the specific company you are interviewing for matters. Employers want to know you want to work at their actual company. Starting with why you are aligned with that company is important. And then talking about how you can add value day one. Adding that you are willing to work hard and have a positive attitude are really big positives as well when you follow up. Everybody likes a positive and hard working team member.

I think a follow up is very appropriate if you have not heard back. Reaffirming your interest is good. Also noting if this company is your top choice can make a big difference.
