One thing I have found helpful in gaining insight into stakeholders needs is to first of all outline their As-is and to-be state which will then give me clearer picture of their desired state. Other skills needed in understanding user/stakeholder needs is creating user stories and using epics and user persona. I hope this helps someone out there to understand what stakeholders need.

A challenge inside game development that I also encountered within creative writing is the situation where Problem-solving inside game design can mirror a writing problem some fantasy and sci-fi writers call "world builder's disease". Where one can get caught in an endless loop of world-building, trying to improve endlessly one's fictional world. Inside game design, one can be caught in a similarly difficult situation, trying to improve and iterate indefinitely the different elements of the game. It is certainly a situation that a coordinated team has to actively avoid, prioritizing specific tasks and problems.
