To clarify your leadership style for an interview, start by reflecting on your core values and experiences that have shaped your approach to leading others. Identify key characteristics that define your style, such as being collaborative, transformational, or results-oriented. Use specific examples to illustrate how you’ve successfully led teams, managed conflicts, or driven projects to completion. Highlight the strategies you employ, such as fostering open communication, empowering team members, or setting clear goals. By articulating these elements cohesively, you demonstrate self-awareness and provide a compelling narrative that aligns with the role you’re seeking.

The first step in building any relationship is clear and proper communication. But to build that, you must know yourself especially if you want to impress someone with your approach. This is crucial, as in interviews first impression matters and the interviewer notices and evaluates every every single move of yours.

So many leaders try to adapt to perceived cultural norms in an interview, instead of bringing their unique set of leadership skills to the table. Take the time to develop the narrative about you as a leader, including your approach, philosophy and drivers. Be sure and have examples you can share that reinforce your leadership experience.

Before the interview, reflect on your leadership style. Ask yourself what principles and values guide your leadership. Consider how you generally handle conflicts and how you encourage and motivate your team. Think of concrete examples of situations where your leadership style was effective. Structure your responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to provide concrete and detailed examples. Describe the context and the challenge you faced, explain what your responsibility was in the situation, detail the specific actions you took to address the situation, and highlight the results achieved due to your actions

I find it very helpful to tell stories when explaining your leadership style. This helps the interviewer understand the context for your decisions, actions and results. Always tie them to the STAR method!

Interviewers are more interested in how you actually operate as as a leader than in theories or ideals—which makes storytelling an effective interview strategy. Consider sharing a story that contains specific details of how you led in a difficult situation, which establishes your credibility and provides a window into what it'd be like to work with you.

Don’t try to be a leader you’re not. Your leadership style is yours because it connects to who you are. Embrace it, evolve it, and be honest about it. Trying to sell a leadership style that’s not yours will ultimately give the impression that you’re not confident in yourself as a leader or that you’re inauthentic. Either of them will not bring you the desired results in an interview. Instead, stick to ‘your guns’ and be proud of them.

By asking you counterpart the right (coaching) questions and then showing your way of listening you can already show your flexibility in leading in your everyday communication and supporting the other person in there thought process. True listening (without thinking too much at the sam moment) will already show that you are right here right now taking time for the other person. It also shows your self-confidence by trusting yourself to some up with answers or more questions after having listened carefully.

The way you behave throughout the whole interview might be the best mirror to show your leadership style on a meta level. How prepared are you emotionally, energetically, structure- and content-wise? Are you in the moment? How well can you stay in rapport with the other person? How are your questioning techniques? How can you tell stories? How can you pursue next steps? How is your time-management? Conversations are the best way to show your leadership experience in a nutshell.
