I have been both; a business owner and now entrepreneur. In my business owner role I hadn't created my business. Yes, I built my business, and I had to be creative to earn revenue/income. I think entrepreneurs have the ability to create something from basically nothing. In my experience, entrepreneurs can create a business that has a "system". When I was a business owner, I was often doing the work, or overseeing someone doing the work. As entrepreneur, I am able to be more of a coach from a distance. If I have done a good job of teaching others my "system" (how it operates with highest success), then I don't necessarily have to be "there". Example: entrepreneurs can create the franchise and business owners can operate.

An entrepreneur constantly seeks to innovate, disrupt, and scale their ventures to create significant impact and change within an industry. In contrast, a small business owner focuses on maintaining and growing their business within the local market, prioritizing stability and steady progress.

Entrepreneurs are all about needs and disruptions. Entrepreneurs do not only focus on making profit but have a more grandiose objective of disrupting the industry or market. Which is why most startup founders are regarded more as entrepreneurs rather than small business owners.

Entrepreneur: Innovation-Driven: Entrepreneurs are known for creating new products, services, or business models. They thrive on innovation and are often at the forefront of industry change. Risk-Taker: Entrepreneurs typically take significant risks to bring their ideas to life. They are comfortable with uncertainty and are often driven by the potential for high rewards. Growth-Oriented: Their focus is on scaling their businesses rapidly and often aim for large markets or global reach. Entrepreneurs are always looking for opportunities to expand. Visionary: Entrepreneurs are usually visionaries who have a long-term view of where they want their business to go. They often disrupt existing markets with their ideas.

In my perspective Entrepreneurs typically have a broad, ambitious vision that aims to create significant change or innovation within an industry or market. Their vision often extends beyond local or regional impact to national or global influence. Entrepreneurs are driven by the desire to disrupt existing markets, introduce groundbreaking products or services, and achieve exponential growth. They envision scaling their business rapidly and reaching a wide audience .Small business owners, in contrast, tend to have a more focused and practical vision. Their goals are usually centered on creating a successful and sustainable business within a specific community or market niche.

To distinguish between an entrepreneur and a small business owner, consider their risk appetite. Entrepreneurs often take on high risks to create innovative solutions and enter new markets. They are willing to face uncertainty and invest in unproven ideas. On the other hand, small business owners typically prefer more stable, lower-risk ventures, focusing on steady growth and established markets. This difference in risk-taking highlights their distinct approaches to business.

I agree that entrepreneurs may tend to invest heavily in unproven ideas, and bet on the potential of their ventures. When I was a business owner, rather than an entrepreneur, of course I wanted growth. I agree that steady growth would have allowed me to plan manage my daily activities so that I was prepared for the growth. Example would be that I wouldn't want so many customers that I couldn't meet their needs at the high demand. If so, people wouldn't return and my reputation for reliability would be at question.

This operational focus may also diminish their ability to innovate and adapt to market changes, highlighting the importance of balancing operational efficiency with strategic vision to foster long-term competitiveness and innovation.

One aspect of business goal setting that I have observed is that a small business owner might have goals, but not necessarily a vision. Also small business owners might more often develop goals based on historical statistics and risk patterns. Entrepreneurs will also do the same, but perhaps also have a vision. Just because one has goals, doesn't necessarily mean they have a vision.
