Here's how you can develop key skills to stay competitive in the future job market.

We have to be curious and open. Awareness that change is rapid and inevitable are key. One thing I see way too often, even amongst us as coaches, is pride. Specifically, not being open to the beginner's mindset and fear of looking "dumb." Ask the questions nobody wants to ask. Get around people further down the road than you and learn all that you can. Find a place to try your new skills. You will suck and fail at first. Be ok with that. It's hard. I need to remember this too.

Consider the skills that are uniquely human and would be most difficult to automate or resolve using AI. Many experts suggest that power skills fall under this category: emotional intelligence, effectively managing group dynamics, resilience and more. Despite misconceptions, many of these skills can be enhanced and developed through intentional, structured learning and practice. For this, though, you need to view your skill set as malleable.

A haiku on embracing change: Embrace change with grace, Growth through challenges unfolds, Adapt, thrive, endure. Change happens all the time, and it's important to accept it to do well. Start by thinking of new things as fun challenges and chances to grow. Try new activities that make you stretch and learn, and listen to advice that can help you get better. By being flexible, you show everyone that you can handle anything that comes your way in the future.

Change is a thorny topic. We often say we like it, but in reality is we don't. Humans crave predictability and are hard-wired to stick to the safe path. Embracing change requires tolerance of uncertainty, inner awareness, and emotional intelligence. The ability to hold space for parts of ourselves that are activated or fearful of change, while staying the course and still taking new actions.

The ability to learn is a competency! Not everyone is good at it, some don’t even want it. Staying competitive requires a lot of self awareness, trend awareness and the ability to be honest with one self. Most people seek to do EXACTLY the same thing but being paid higher because of their length of stay; the truth is, organizations want to pay for your value NOT for your tenure. If you’re essentially doing the same thing over 5 years, you’re merely 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 1. The most competitive talents are hungry to learn and take initiative; they hone their ability to learn and are ferocious with their intent to become better. Firstly ask yourself if you have that hunger in you to want it more than everyone else.

Continuous learning can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's necessary in today's landscape to continually upgrade or grow your skills. On the other hand, the continuous pursuit of learning can be exhausting and reinforce the idea that you aren't enough or need to be more. Navigating this duality by requires embracing intentionality. When your learning is guided by specific intentions that are ideally linked to your personal gaols, it can make learning more inspiring.

Consistency is the key to manage any change. You have to keep moving whatever happens and gain the knowledge at every step. If you fail, it will increase your experience, if you pass, it will increase your knowledge. I will learning with experience is the mantra here

Join professional groups and forums where emerging trends and technologies are discussed. Collaborating and exchanging ideas with peers can provide practical insights and enhance your understanding of how new tools and strategies are applied in real-world scenarios. This proactive approach not only broadens your expertise but also keeps you connected with the latest industry developments.

Here's something that isn't prioritised but it should be when you want to network smartly and create real connections. Focus on your state of mind before you walk into any room. Why do you want to network? What's your purpose? Ask yourself these two questions before you take that first step into any networking opportunity. Are you focused on creating real connection with the purpose of being of value to each person you connect with? Or are you attending events, online and offline with desperation or even worse, apathy? This is where you check your mindset before you do any networking and if you are coming from a negative state of mind, shift your thoughts to a more positive focus and watch the magic unfold.

While it may be tempting to attempt to craft a polished version of yourself, I find that the greater the gap between what you present to others and what you feel inside, the more stress or anxiety it can create. It's important to build your brand with authenticity.
