I believe that in order to make an effective decision, you first must decide,for yourself, exactly what the word “effective” means to you personally in the context of what result you wish to achieve. Complexity is just that, complex. Complex problems cannot be solved but they can be smashed into smaller, solvable complicated problems. From my perspective, making an effective decision is much like landing an airplane; it’s all about your approach.

A good decision-maker can effectively choose between data, instinct, and advice; based on the situation at hand. One way to become a good decision maker is to train yourself to recognise which situation required what approach. Start with the small decisions - experiment with each approach, understand how each approach plays out. Understand which framework works best, what your "shadow thinking" spots are etc. As you continue to build on your experiences, you will learn to turn towards the right approach for each decision you will need to make. Finally, while the act of making the decision can be considered - the mark of a good decision maker is ALSO to recognise when the decision is bad, and to find alternative solutions - and fast!

As a surgeon, effective decision-making is a matter of life and death, requiring split-second choices with absolute clarity and confidence. Here’s how these attributes play out in the surgical field: In the operating room, there is no room for ambiguity. Every action must be clear and purposeful, ensuring precision and effectiveness. Clarity is the most critical aspect. In surgery, decisions must be swift, based on training and experience, as delays can compromise patient outcomes. For surgeons dealing with intricate structures, the beauty and challenge lie in making swift, decisive actions without fear of adverse outcomes. This will depend on the clarity of why we did or did not do at that second. Thats why our profession is a challenge.
