Your job when resolving conflict is to achieve understanding. This is not to be confused with ‘agreement’. If you can make it your goal, your job, your aim, to understand another person, it makes it that much easier to show/extend them grace. When you treat them with kindness and understanding (grace),it makes it easier for others to be willing to follow you. Then, if the opportunity for leadership comes available, it will bode better for you than if you relied on your ‘tenure’, ‘seniority’, or ‘abilities’ alone to secure the promotion.

Without a level of self management, you may tend you let emotions get the better of you. When this happens, you may say the wrong things. Even if you say the right thing, it will "show up" in the wrong way. Everyone may have a different way of dealing with this but this is what works for me... If you feel yourself slowly moving into an emotional hijack, pause, recognize what you are feeling and respond when you feel that you could maintain your objectivity. This will make all the difference.

Objectivity allows to understand all sides, identify the root causes, and foster a fair resolution. By prioritizing transparency and listening actively, creates an environment of trust and collaboration. This not only resolves conflicts more effectively but also strengthens organizational culture.

Having a solution vs. blame focus will definitely help you be seen as a skilled conflict-manager, but I would suggest that rather than jump to offering solutions, you engage others to brainstorm potential solutions with you through open-ended questions. Using questions to guide others towards sustainable solutions not only empowers them, but also develops their problem-solving skills as well. Just because you're the leader, doesn't mean you need to have all the answers. Engage your people in finding solutions through powerful questions that trigger their creative thinking, and gain their buy-in to a lasting solution.

Managing your emotions becomes much easier when you take the time to really see the big picture. And this can only be done by pausing, listening, learning, and then responding productively. Our knee-jerk reactions can be tempered when we make the decision to protect the relationship, and see the bigger picture of the problem. So, use strategies that allow you to stay choiceful about how you want to be, when you feel yourself being triggered. Know what your triggers are, and then remind yourself that you don't know all sides of the story - only your own. The more you're willing to learn about the various perspectives, the easier it will be to manage your emotions because your focus will be on how others feel - not just your own state.
