Trust is especially critical with a dispersed workforce model, when face-to-face interactions are absent, and all you have to build on is, you guessed it, trust!

Trust is critical in any kind of relationship including work relationships. Building trust in a work environment helps with creating cohesion and team building. There must be trust among all in the workplace including among employees, managers, and supervisors. When present, trust creates team morale and boosts productivity.

Trust is one of the most difficult aspect to build in a team. It's been said that trust is earned, and I agree. Once trust is established, then it's impact cannot be underrated. In the past, great deals were sealed with just a handshake, but now...it's a whole other gameplay. If you can build trust then you are on the right path. Communication comes clearly and without undertones that are detrimental to a good work environment.

One thing I've found helpful in building trust is to make a conscious effort to listen- give space and air to breathe in conversations. When a connection feels forced there feels like underlying motives are present. To make your motives feel passive, engage in introductory conversations with the intention to understand the other party, if you successfully build rapport there will be more opportunities to communicate your message. Be selective with the times you choose to share it.

It is never a good practice to wing an evaluation with an employee. It does a disservice to you as the supervisor and the employee by not giving qualified evaluation of their strengths and areas of improvement. This is always a great time to add tools to the employee toolbox for the position.

I think that being specific is a double edged sword. I don’t want my employees to think I’m micromanaging them. That said, if there is one or more specific continuous issue(s) cropping up you might invite them to take some extra training or work with a mentor to brush up on those lagging skills. If they improve praise them and maybe give them a special project to bolster their ego and show that you are appreciative. A simple thank you or well done can go a long way towards improving how an employee views criticism and perhaps overcoming the negativity surrounding criticism in general. You should be building character and morale and confidence.

When giving broad and amorphous feedback, this doesn't build confidence in your expertise as a manager. While you may not have the exact, technical skills of many team members, if you can't display an understanding of the specifics of their work, you lose credibility as a relevant leader. When preparing for a regular review, if you don't confidently comprehend the functions that you are asking them to improve upon, then you better go back to step two and prepare more. Sit down and read some articles regarding best practices, look up relevant data, and identify exactly how your teammate is meeting the mark and exactly how they can improve.

Open dialogue starts with effective listening. We cannot have a dialogue if we are not paying attention to what the team member is saying, even if they are being defensive to your feedback.

Being a community leader I have realised that dialogue and an efficient feedback loop help the team be confident and feel inclusive. Often, lack of dialogue leads to distrust and employee discontentment which can lead to under-confidence in a team or also create a situation of disharmony. Opening up and encouraging open dialogue is key to improving performance and inculcates confidence.

The adage goes: no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. Are you presenting feedback as a dictator? OR are you engaging them in joint problem solving? Are you simply presenting your complaints? OR are you giving room for their own feedback and responses? Additionally, real dialogue requires patience and time set aside for it, so if you spend 30 minutes telling them what they did wrong and give them only 5 minutes for dialogue, you are not showing them that you care about their thoughts. At that point, you've lost their trust.

No secrets or sideswiping. There needs to have been a progression from a starting point and informed choice. No special privileges if you are being fair. A privilege is not a necessary accommodation. An accommodation is necessary and beneficial.

Being growth-centric is essential. Often we see that there are conflicts in terms of employee and employer interest when it comes to discussing individual and cumulative growth. This could be a challenge in seeing the bigger picture. In my opinion, the best way to succeed is to identify growth points for both sides and work along with short-term goals as well as the bigger picture in mind. Growth is often relative but can always be achieved with time and effort around ones role and how he/she justifies the same at a team and organizational level.

I always try to give feedback with the issue and the impact as it provides a foundation for discussion and growth. When I review a document and provide feedback to a team member, it becomes a touchpoint for our review sessions. For example, if I’m providing feedback on a termination section of a master agreement; we will revisit it when we discuss the term for the statement of work. Not to harp on an error but to provide context and connection. . By taking the time to provide feedback and discuss the context and consequences, they learn and are able to become independent because they can follow my train of thought.

Don't do randomized reinforcements of your feedback. Instead, set follow-up dates. Let them know that their growth is important to you and the team. Put it on the calendar. When you hold those follow-up discussions, ask them if you're also displaying the improvements that you committed to in the initial conversation. If you make a concerted effort to show them that you are taking THEIR feedback seriously, they will do the same. Reciprocity is key.

Demonstrate and lead by example. Ask for feedback. Inform and advise. Offer viable options and choices. Use group exercises where you can and broker a comfort level for exploring.

Too often performance evaluation is treated as an event, rather than as a process. Mentorship is accomplished by open dialog, leading by example, and small course corrections. This is a better method for building engaged employees who are internally motivated to be their best.

Self evaluation and honesty will allow the employee to truly grow and develop with access to the right tools and the support of management. The desire and drive to become more is something the individual needs to develop and future for example reading books or audio books from leaders in the industry of choice.

Start this process early. Too often we may wait to give feedback until the issue is “significant”. By this time it tends to be too late. When we give feedback earlier the corrections can be quicker and have larger impacts.
