Before you start to assess your value and contribution and seek an open dialogue with your boss (all which are necessary and important), you need to understand the strategy of the firm as detailed by your boss clearly. Unless you are able to do that, you cannot really assess your contribution and value add to engage with your boss meaningfully. Who knows? After you have done assess your contribution towards the firm’s strategy and have the open dialogue with your boss, you may find out that he/she may have pivoted his strategy without conveying explicitly to the team, thus causing the misalignment. My belief is always get the strategy right first before alignment could be achieved across the Board (upstream and downstream).
